Supergirl 5x05 "Dangerous Liaisons" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Supergirl is pushing Kara Danvers and William Dey on us. I can feel the writing trying to make us like them, and feel sympathy for William Dey. Don’t get me wrong, I do feel its pull, but I’m not liking the potential romance. After what happened with Mon-El during seasons two and three, I really hoped the show wouldn’t try to pull this stunt again. The main heroine doesn’t need a romantic interest right now. Onto the positives, Leviathan’s starting to make their move.
I’m glad we’re getting momentum on Leviathan pretty quickly. Crisis On Infinite Earths improved all the Arrowverse storylines this year. They should unite all or at least three shows under a crossover banner every year if it indeed helps the writing. Elseworlds is proof that at least three out of the five shows will do for a crossover event.
Lena crossed so many lines this season. However, she chose not to cross the killing line at least. Malefic is confused about Lena’s betrayal, which is pretty valid. Lena’s morals seem to be all over the place. I’m still putting money on Hope / Eve betraying Lena at any point because all AI’s become self-aware and betray their creators. Right?
Rip Roar and Russell Rogers. The R’s alone had me guessing they were the same person. It was tripping me up. This makes me wonder about William Dey’s “journalism” abilities. Kara solved the case way faster than he did in two years. This episode had me going WTF one too many times.
Kelly and Nia scene was precious. They didn’t devote much time to it, but I loved Nia for reaching out and helping a friend. We need more character development like this from Kelly. She needs to become something more than Alex’s new girlfriend. I still think the writers misfired by putting them together too early. I’m still not sold on them yet.
Overall, this episode kind-of took a step back from the previous episodes in terms of performance. However, it still had strong plot relevant progression when it involved Leviathan, Malefic, Andrea, and Lena. I can see how all those pieces can fit together before Crisis On Infinite Earths next month.
