Batwoman 1x05 "Mine Is a Long And a Sad Tale" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
On this week’s episode, Alice / Beth Kane stole the spotlight. I was thrown that we got so much background on Alice / Beth so soon compared to Kate Kane, who popped in out of nowhere to save a girlfriend that didn’t want her. I enjoyed most of this episode for Alice, Kate, and Mary. Not in that order. Sophie needs rework on her character. Luke and Mary’s scenes together rocked. Hopefully, this means she’ll learn the Batwoman secret before an inevitable Crisis comes for them all.
Catherine’s motive was too similar to Moira’s Undertaking, but at least Batwoman took a different approach with the follow-up of this truth. It doesn’t seem like Catherine staged Beth’s death for anything other than to give Jacob and Kate some closure. Mary spoke for all of us when she said people can tell between deer and human bone fragments. Please let her join Team Batwoman soon.
Luke Fox needs something other than the guy in chair who helps the heroine. Luke seems to have a lot of information when it comes to Bruce Wayne / Batman / Bat cave, but above that, I find him difficult to process as a real character. Also, Luke needs to hang out with a person other than Kate and in a place other than Wayne Tower. We need more from him.
The flashback portion was incredibly effective. Young Beth Kane staying quiet, inches away from her sister, to protect her family was really heartbreaking. I don’t think we’ll need another Alice-centric flashback after this because the implications are too vivid. Young Beth and Young Kate… I have to say it again! That was so sad! Beth’s innocence died that day.
Alice’s performance or the writing needs to be better. The Alice in Wonderland quotes feel too stiffed for me to take seriously. Overall, the first season is slowly getting better, and I believe the show’s caught up with Elseworlds. How will the show catch up to Crisis now?
