How To Get Away With Murder 6x06 "Family Sucks" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
“Family Sucks” is the title and theme of the episode. A rare episode where the characters drive the plot instead of the plot driving the characters. Michaela is gradually becoming amazing in the final season and finds closure with her biological father, who was clunky at best. Why did they have to throw in a unseen romantic history between Solomon and Annalise? It doesn’t seem necessary.
I love the Connor-Bonnie moment in this episode. Connor’s search for being chosen by Annalise was answered in the most unexpected way. It brought him back to his former roots prior to season one and the person he’s trying to be again. Bonnie and Connor do not interact much, but their moment was beautiful. Bonnie chose Connor to join their group because she, as an abuse survivor, sympathized with him. The series is going to end very soon.
Asher also deals with his family, mother and sister, finding that his mother still blamed him and “forgave” him for the sins he committed. His character development is defined by his family, and how that brings him back to Michaela worked… it also helps Gabriel’s role in the show is not the greatest. After the big reveal that he’s Sam’s son, he lost a lot because the mystery’s over.
Michaela has been on a roll this season with her own stand-alone storyline. I mentioned her biological father’s introduction / characterization was sloppy at best, which is a real shame because Aja Naomi King’s monologues were beautiful and felt wasted on such a poorly put together character. I didn’t like her cheating on Gabriel with Asher though. It shows she has a tendency to repeat her mistakes: she cheated on Asher with that dude from Scandal. I don’t watch Scandal.
Other things were going on in this episode like Frank and Annalise’s backup plan to run away, but they weren’t as interesting as what I discussed above. I’m here to review until the end of the series. I hope Annalise Keating escaped all the craziness and didn’t die.
