This Is Us 4x08 "Sorry" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
As I mentioned in my last episode review of This Is Us, Randall has been getting effective parallel storylines with his parents. The newest episode showed us that “R & R” time, the lame name for when Randall and Rebecca hang out with each other in flashbacks and in present day before Thanksgiving. Kevin and Cassidy’s storyline also concludes before the holiday. Kate and Toby are showing signs of conflict as well in their storyline, but it didn’t add to anything in the long run.
The flashback story also showed signs of Teenage Kate’s boyfriend Mark, and his toxic behavior. Teenage Randall sees the signs, but Young Rebecca is brushing it off to get a entry level job. The bond is pretty sweet to watch as Teenage Randall does everything without appreciation for Young Rebecca during her time of need. I love how the show displays this to show us how that boiled over time into the present day.
Rebecca is showing the signs of dementia she had in the flash forward through the usage of her phone and hyper sensitivity to her condition. Randall is concerned, but if it weren’t for that flash forward, I’d think he was tripping too to be honest. They end the fight on an unkind note, which means Thanksgiving is not going to be fun for anyone involved.
Which includes Uncle Nicky.
I love how they showed Uncle Nicky’s growth throughout this season, and how the trial was used to convey it. Cassidy’s role on the show is concluded based on how she tries to put her family back together. Kevin’s leaving for home with Uncle Nicky is an awesome way to end this storyline. I wonder what’s next for Kevin and Uncle Nicky after this arc.
Using Jack Pearson as a stand-in for Uncle Nicky during the “Jack” moments were rather strong. It showed Kevin was seeing his father shine through his Uncle, and it helped put Uncle Nicky’s character development in perspective. I think Uncle Nicky and Rebecca is going to be the best part of the Thanksgiving episode.
I didn’t care about the Toby and Kate storyline this week. The “missing firsts” and lying to Toby about it doesn’t seem important. I wasn’t invested in this side-story that has no real value. Maybe, this will lead into a bigger fight but I’m grasping at straws here.
Overall, This Is Us stumbled last season, but they found their footing again.
