Supernatural 15x03 "The Rupture" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
The first three episodes resolved “The Rupture” Chuck ripped open in Hell, but it came at a great cost. The season premiere sacrificed respect for Jack being dead by introducing a demon to take his body, the second episode sacrificed Kevin Tran’s peace in Heaven, and this episode killed off two major characters. Usually, we’d have “hunt” filler episodes and this would-be a “mid-season” moment, but the final season threw out the rules book like it did everything else.
After another spell goes wrong to contain the souls, Rowena believes all is lost… until Demon-Jack suggests going to Hell to retrieve Lilith’s “crook”, a magical horn that can summon all the spirits back where they came from. Of course, Demon-Jack was lying about the souls being absorbed into him so he can become all-powerful “enough” God.
Although, Demon-Jack and Castiel had some amazing scenes together until the end. Castiel’s grief is very human, which is a long way from the character he was in season four, while Dean is reduced to the same trauma that broke him in the first place: the death of his mother. This episode ends on a rather sad note where Castiel decides to “move on”, not allowing himself to be used as a punching bag anymore.
Arthur Ketch, Demon-Jack, and Rowena meet their demise by the end of the episode. Arthur wasn’t that shocking except with all the gory coming out of his body, while the other two deaths weighed heavier as these were characters the Winchesters actually liked. Castiel destroying Demon-Jack and the body was heartbreaking to watch, and I sympathize for the broken angel.
Rowena and Sam’s emotional goodbye was too much to bear. The prophecy was fulfilled, but the stab looked more like a signature Winchester hug than anything else. Seeing her off was Dean, Sam, and Castiel as she dropped into The Rupture using her life to reseal it. Her development over the past five seasons was extremely satisfying to watch in the end as we’ve ultimately grown to love her as an ally to the Winchesters. She will be missed. It doesn’t feel like the show’s ending, but it is ending… once the whole picture of the season comes into play, I’m sure it’ll start truly feeling like THE END. The three-episode arc was a good change of pace though.
I can’t wait to see how it all plays out with the Winchesters, Castiel, Chuck, and the other story elements in play like The Empty, Billie, Jack, and of course, Adam and Michael. Let’s hope everything works out for those boys.
