Lucifer Season 3 Review
Major spoilers are included in this episode review.
I have become a Lucifan right before 2018 ended. I have fallen in bed with the Devil. But seriously, Lucifer is a pretty incredible show. The follow-up to the season two finale was no easy feat to accomplish. The storyline of the second season wrapped up, but the cliffhanger of Lucifer’s wings returning changed the course for the third season. However, I did find myself frustrated or annoyed at the pacing of the Sinnerman mystery.
The first part of the third season focused on Lucifer trying to find the Sinnerman, an unknown enemy who kidnapped Lucifer and may be involved in Lucifer’s wings returning. His Devil Face has also vanished with the return of his wings. However, it was hard to remember with some stand-alone episodes disrupting the flow of the season.
Having them back-to-back didn’t help the situation. There was “Vegas with Some Radish” and “Off The Record”… two episodes that didn’t directly affect the plot and considered stand-alone episodes. While they were entertaining as Hell, the episodes made me wonder why we weren’t going after the Sinnerman or showcasing new character Marcus Pierce (Tom Welling).
Marcus Pierce was an excellent addition to the third season. He was the new police lieutenant / boss of Chloe, Dan, and Ella. Everyone, except Ella, hated him for his bluntness and aloofness. After he revealed himself to being Cain, the world’s first murderer and cursed immortal, the season gained momentum in his quest to finally die. His motives got muddled at times when he began to show interest in Chloe and his radical decision to wanting his curse back.
Despite being the main villain of the season, Pierce doesn’t show off his true bone-chilling villainy until the season (NOT SERIES) finale. He recruits many people to his cause, finally afraid of dying, and manipulates the entire LAPD’s investigation to ensure he doesn’t get discovered as the Sinnerman. While I enjoyed the suspense, I wished Pierce got to show his dark side earlier in the season.
Maze and Linda’s friendship was tested this season. Hell, all of Maze’s friendships were tested this season. She couldn’t handle the human emotions she was developing and began to lash out… hurting Trixie was a low blow even for a demon. After losing everybody, including Lucifer, Maze teamed up with Pierce to get revenge and to return to Hell where she belongs.
By season’s end, Maze realized her mistake and fought her way back to Linda. While Linda was never in harm’s way, Maze risked everything to make sure her best friend was okay.
Amenadiel has returned to being Team God. He believes in his Father again and that Lucifer is his test. He begins to bond with Linda romantically and the revived Charlotte Richards over the course of the season. His friendship with Dan continued to thrive as well. The random character pairings work so well on this show, like I’m here for them, not the actual story.
Lucifer went through a lot this season trying to blame his Dad for everything, but through his battle with Pierce / Sinnerman, he managed to embrace his returned angel wings in order to save Chloe Decker, the woman he loved. However, he had to become the monster he always hated and break the one angel rule: no killing humans. When he killed Pierce, his Devil face returned, forever changing him and his romance with Chloe, who finally discovered the truth about Lucifer.
With a season four officially coming, this cliffhanger will be addressed and one of countless storylines will be told about Chloe knowing the truth behind the Devil. Ella Lopez needs to get more screentime in the next season too. Her stand-alone episode with Ra-Ra, Lucifer’s younger angelic sister, was too cute, and we need more of this particular angel.
Overall, season three started out muddled a bit, resolved the Sinnerman with a clunky resolution, but the season finale was marvelously executed. It would’ve worked as a somewhat okay series finale if Lucifer wasn’t renewed by Netflix. The campy-ness of the show can get annoying at times, but these amazing characters are worth investing in.
I’m excited for season four!
