Lucifer Season 2 Review
Major Spoilers are included in this season review. Please read with Caution.
This show sustained me over the Holiday season. The second season builds on the mythology of the show by bringing the Goddess (Lucifer’s mum) into the small picture. If you hadn’t seen season one, I’d drop out now and take a look at my review on the first season. The link is here.
The flow of the season felt really off for me post-episode 13. Lucifer getting married to an exotic dancer named Candy Morningstar was bound to happen at some point and honestly quite distracting from the Chloe-Lucifer romance.
This season had 18 episodes, five more than the first season. After learning Fox added on more episodes, the disconnect made a lot more sense. However, I realized the reason I stuck around was not for the story, but the characters. They have been written well this season, and a lot of them developed in unexpected ways.
Lucifer starts to unpack his family struggles.
Maze steps away from Lucifer and searches for her purpose on Earth.
Amenadiel loses his powers and becomes a fallen angel.
Chloe and Dan officially divorce, allowing them to navigate a new status quo.
Linda Martin struggles with learning the truth about Lucifer.
The “case of the week” become more weaved with Lucifer’s internal conflict and/or the other characters’ problems. However, when Lucifer makes the police investigation about him, it never does feel forced to do so but a part of his character. The mythology behind the cases like finding the pieces of the Flaming Sword took precedent over the normal criminals doing bad things.
Two new characters are also introduced for this season: Charlotte Richards (Tricia Helfer) and Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia). Charlotte Richards is a lawyer and the Goddess’s human vessel. Ella Lopez is a new face at the LAPD and quite a joy to have around. Their introductions didn’t actually overcrowd the cast and found ways to enhance the story / character interactions.
Chloe Decker is a prime example. During this season, she branched outside of Lucifer and Dan in favor of hanging out with the female characters like Maze, Linda, and Ella. The episode with their Girls Night Out was well-written and strengthened the friendships between the pairings. Maze and Linda was the best developed friendship in my opinion. Yes, Chloe and Maze was great too when they lived together, but I was blown by how close Linda and Maze got towards the end of the season.
Speaking of Mazikeen, she was really underused in the first season. Giving Maze her own storyline helped flesh out her character and give her multiple chances to interact with other characters beside Lucifer. She finally put herself first and got tired of being second to Lucifer Morningstar himself. Also, Trixie, the daughter of Chloe and Dan, being Maze’s first human friend was really cute.
Charlotte Richards as The Goddess and her quest to make amends was awkward but endearing. The constant gag of everyone assuming Lucifer and Charlotte hooked up worked throughout most of the season. But once Dan started to sleep with Charlotte, adding another layer of awkwardness, the family angle became much more complicated to explain to the non-celestial beings. Tricia Helfer played the mother wonderfully, and there was no question on her end about being Lucifer’s mother.
Amenadiel lost his angelic powers and began to question the bad choices he made in the first season. He became a supporting character and joins his mother and Lucifer in their plan of returning to Heaven. The first part of season two had him asking for forgiveness from Maze and Linda, the human women he hurt / used in the previous season. Once he got his needed proof of being God’s favorite son, he started to regain a sense of his identity / purpose.
Ella Lopez is a great character who believes in God and gives people hugs all the time. She is talkative, mischievous, and blends well with the other characters. Lucifer and Ella have great chemistry with each other, which irked Chloe as the pair became closer. She is easily becoming my favorite character with a complex background involving multiple brothers, stealing cars, and picking locks.
Chloe and Lucifer went through a lot this season. Like I mentioned in my first season review, these two are the heart of the show. They became closer as the season progressed and have shared their first official kiss on the beach. However, the timing never came around for them to become more than friends. My heart melted every time Chloe told Lucifer, “I’m here for you”… the reassurance was amazing.
Overall, the second season had a fantastic beginning, stumbled in the second half, but managed to stick the landing with the cliffhanger season finale. I am currently watching season three and will most likely get that review out in 2019.
Happy New Years Eve!
