Station 19 1x10 "Not Your Hero" Episode Review
Station 19 proved itself formidable in its season finale. I cried more in this episode than the Grey's Anatomy season 14 finale. Who lives? Who dies? The idea of who is captain is not even on the radar. Doubts about this show being successful burned out around episode 3-4 for me, but this finale delivered my solid belief on how this show can hold its own.
Miranda Bailey does appear in the finale, but she is here for Ben and Pruitt. I hope to see more Meredith-Andy friendship in the next crossover event if there is one in the making for the following seasons. These shows can not only coexist but work off each other in the most organic ways possible.
Spoilers for the fiery season finale.
Chief Ripley is holding last round interviews for the captain position at Station 19. No one at Station 19 likes this. They feel invaded, especially Vic.
It doesn't help that Maya hooked up with the enthusiastic candidate Dearborn. Andy hates her for what happened during the examination, but Maya had no idea about this. She has Wednesday hook-ups despite Andy living at her house. Andy's been staying there after finding out her father threw the station under the bus.
But the captain race is put on hold! Ben is celebrated for getting past the rookie stage and awarded the keys to the Aid Car. He is allowed to drive, and Miranda is there with the rest of the team to celebrate with him. This is a big accomplishment! It's going to be a great day!
Then the celebration is put on hold!
A skyscraper fire occurred and all stations, except 19, are called in to help out. The team grows restless, wanting to help out, and watch the news about the fire. Then Jack reveals the truth to Andy: if he doesn't get captain, he's going to transfer to another department. He has regrets and wants to start over.
This hurts Andy, but she has no time to process.
Station 19 is called into action for the skyscraper fire. Chief Ripley set up a command center and Ryan is there too because reasons. They have to figure out better ways to incorporate him next season. Maya and Vic volunteer to help people while Andy goes score points with Ripley for the captain race. Friendship goals!
Dearborn is already doing heavy duty. She jumps over fire and gets caught in debris. Andy recklessly jumps fire to save her. She also has a handy C02 bomb that extinguishes the fire on the other side. This lets Dean and Jack help Andy lift the debris off Dearborn.
She is out of the game for the rest of the episode.
We meet Molly, who is the fire safety monitor. She is an intern for the company building on fire and takes her job seriously. Which is a good thing at a time like this. Maya and Vic put her in charge of a door so no one leaves and runs into the fires. Her boss tries to leave in a panic, but Molly puts him in his place. Probably at the cost of her job.
Dean and Jack stay behind to extinguish flames while Andy took Dearborn down to the main floor. They talk about last week's episode and how he incorrectly inputted the wrong code. I'm surprised he confessed so soon about this colossal mistake.
The fires get dangerously close to some flammable stuff on the floor and they found another person trapped in the smoke. Jack radios Ripley and tells him to evacuate the entire building because the whole place might go down.
Andy finds Maya and Vic. She tells them to evacuate civilians and has Molly lead a group down the stairs. Molly is unraveling because she's just a kid who wants to see her mom outside, but she stays brave to get everyone to safety.
A strange noise bothers Vic, but Maya doesn't hear it. She's suffering hearing problems after the garage explosion. I knew she wasn't okay after that incident. The fire shoots up the building and attacks our firefighters.
Ben and Travis get into trouble. A shard of glass pierces Travis' chest and into his heart. He might die, and this is where I'm sobbing. I love Travis and he was so close to opening up to that one guy about his feelings. Ben is determined to save him and drags him down the stairs.
When Ben gets there, he hears a faint whistle. NO! Molly got trampled by all those people who panicked about the soaring fire. She is crying and barely breathing. Ben has to choose between saving Travis or Molly, but the better option is the latter. Travis knows he's a goner and encourages Ben to make the right call by saving the girl rather than him.
STOP DOING THIS! I CANNOT TAKE THIS!
Jack and Dean try to get the fire victim who inhaled too much smoke down the elevator. Ripley refuses to use the elevators because the fire could get in there. Andy disobeys protocol and snatches the key out of his hand. She turns on the elevator for everyone to get on.
Problem? Only Dean and the fire victim get on the elevator. Jack stays behind and becomes a hero. He's going to contain the fires best he can by shutting all the doors on the floor. Jack informs Andy about the situation, and she demands to see him face to face.
I didn't know what that meant until they opened elevator doors and found a way to talk without using the radios. Jack looks down on Andy and tells her to get out of the building. He can't escape at this point. The elevators are done, the stairs are blocked, and someone has to contain the fire.
Andy doesn't want this, but Jack is not going to save himself and let his team suffer. The entire Station 19 is inside the building, and he will do whatever it takes to save them. Jack confesses he lied about the regrets and will keep radioing her for as long as he can.
TEARS ARE ATTACKING MY FACE! EMOTIONS ARE ALL OVER!
One more cliffhanger we gotta talk about: Pruitt Herrera.
He calls Ryan to take him to the hospital and ends up collapsing. Ryan and Miranda Bailey arrive at the same time to check up on him. He had a doctor's appointment but he missed it and Miranda was worried. They find him unconscious and after failing CPR, they rush him over to Grey-Sloan!
The last scene: Andy keeps talking with Jack until the radio goes silent. The entire team is where we left them: Vic conquered her fear and teams up with Maya to fight the fire, Ben debates saving whose life, and Dean is trapped in the elevator with the fire victim.
SO MANY CLIFFHANGERS! WHY IS THIS SHOW SO GOOD?!
Season 1 of Station 19 ended with a huge fiery bang inside a skyscraper. Jack and Travis have to live! Please don't let them die in the season two opening. I've grown attached over the past ten episodes. Why do I do this to myself?!
Comment and let me know how we're doing. If you don't watch this and watch Grey's, I highly recommend giving this first season a real chance.
