Station 19 1x09 "Hot Box" Episode Review
I'm still emotional about that Grey's Anatomy episode. If you watched the most recent episode, the link to that review is here.
But let's get into why you clicked on this page. How are we feeling about the Grey's spin-off? I'm feeling the heat about this show. We're only one episode away from the finale too (the episode count for the season is 10).
Next episode will determine who becomes the new Captain of Station 19, but the odds are not in either Jack or Andy's favor.
Spoilers going into this episode review.
Andy is full of energy, full of life. She's going on runs with Ryan, her new man, and is a lot more happier. The captain race is nearing its conclusion, but she is confidant she'll get the position. Her father tries to discourage Andy from getting her hopes up.
She doesn't know yet what her father did in last week's episode. Ben Warren also has a bone to pick with Pruitt, but he is not in the mood for it because he feels guilty for throwing Andy and his team under the bus to Chief Ripley.
The crew gets sent on a call for a residential fire. They arrive to find a couple in the midst of a divorce. The wife Audrey burnt all their belongings in the fireplace, and the whole house gets caught in that mess. Ryan is already there on the scene because who else is going to respond?
Andy and Jack agree to "stuffing the turkey". This means they'll seal the fire inside and then blast it there all in one place. It's incredibly dangerous because the house can overheat if the fire is contained in one area.
When the team tries to get access through the garage, Audrey is unable to open her door because blistered thumb. I should explain. She works in cyber security and made her house into a fortress with a finger-scanning device that opens the door.
So, Audrey gives Jack the override code 0302, and he sends Dean to override the system. If he only remembered the code when he got there, the whole episode could've been avoided. But he's been spending all his time with JJ (Brenda Song) and zero on sleep, so he forgets.
After punching in the code wrong two times, the lock down system activates and traps Andy, Jack, his partner Karen, Maya, and Audrey inside. Dean radioed Jack a few times for the code confirmation but got no response. This is because Dean's radio was on the wrong channel.
These mistakes have put the trapped team in a horrible situation.
The fire is getting worse, and Audrey has made the house too impenetrable to get them out. Andy describes their situation as "being in a literal oven".
Travis takes charge on the outside (let this man come out of left field and become Captain) and bring out the chainsaws to break the garage door down. Dean takes matters into his own hands, wracked with guilt, and attacks the unbreakable windows.
Ben calms Dean down because he was wasting energy. Dean eyes the wall underneath the window and smashes that instead. Travis is informed and get people to hose it down to take out some of the heat. It won't save them, but it'll buy them some time.
Everyone is panicking inside the garage. As the heat increases, so does everyone else's optimism about getting out. None of their tactics work: using the car as a battering ram, hot-wiring the garage door, hacking the door into the house, etc.
Then they end up on the floor to preserve coolness. Also Jack gets the hint that Andy and Ryan are together through their not-so-subtle dialogue. It sounded dirty even to me. Y'all are not slick. Maya is also losing it and freaks out on Andy about how she would've approached the situation differently.
Karen provides comedic relief and asks the girls on how to let Jack down easy, thinking he was super into her. Andy and Maya were too speechless and so was I. Upgrade her to series regular next season or use her way more often.
When Pruitt hears his daughter is in trouble, he rushes to the scene and pleads with Andy to not give up. She needs to figure out another way, to think outside the box they're trapped in, and my emotions go through the roof.
I was still reeling from the whole April situation from Grey's Anatomy, so I was not ready to take that emotional pep talk in.
It was time for two options: Crazy or Death. The team decides to use the water heater as a missile using gasoline from the car and the pilot light to explode the garage door open. When the whole thing is set to fire, Maya notices something loose and runs to fix it.
The projectile goes off and gets the door open. But it also flung Maya back to the wall. For a minute, I thought she was going to get seriously injured, but she turns out perfectly fine. Andy runs to her friend and then to her father!
WHAT A SCARE! I SCREAMED!
In the aftermath, the team goes to Joe's Bar (YAY for Grey's Anatomy!) to celebrate the huge victory. Maya, Ryan, and Andy are getting too comfortable with each other. I'm still sensing sparks between Maya and Ryan. I think I'm a little into love triangles.
Jack wants to know what happened with Dean and the code. But Victoria covers for him and blames it on a malfunction. I think they need to stop protecting each other or some sort of consequence needs to blow up in their faces about these mistakes.
Then Jack confronts Andy and Ryan about them being together. I did not like his tone when he spoke to Andy, but he deserved to know the truth. After getting the truth out of her, Jack leaves heartbroken.
Way to go, Andy.
Once Jack leaves, Pruitt steps in and has a talk with his daughter. She thanks him for the role he played in saving her in that garage. Pruitt ends up confessing: he didn't support Jack or Andy for the Captain position. He does not want the Station 19 family to pick sides and shows in his tone that he didn't approve on how Jack and Andy handled their relationship.
Andy is angry and declares to her father that the team will be united together "against someone else". She leaves Joe's Bar with Ryan, leaving her father alone to wallow about his most recent decision.
I cannot believe Pruitt betrayed his daughter and the station. He let his personal feelings get in the way, and I'm sure this will have lasting consequences on his relationships with Andy and the rest of the team. Especially if his opinion affects the final outcome.
Sound off in the comments on who you think will become Captain! I think Travis because he's been great whenever he had to step for either Jack or Andy. But that's just me hoping for the impossible.
