DC's Legends of Tomorrow 3x18 "The Good, The Bad, and The Cuddly" Episode Review
We made it! Legends of Tomorrow season 3 finale and it was quite spectacular! I enjoyed every second of this insane episode and all the familiar faces who made a comeback to help out in the final clash against Mallus. Apparently we have been saying Mallus' name wrong the entire time. I think I'm still saying it wrong, but it's okay because the demon is finally vanquished by the end of the hour using the powerful of the six totems. It opened a realm of new problems for the Legends to deal with for next season, which is how John Constantine makes his way onto the team.
My review:
We suffered two losses during tonight's episode: our founding Legend and our most recurring villain besides Malcolm Merlyn. Early in the episode, Rip Hunter sacrificed himself to give his team enough time to escape in the Waverider. We saw a montage of his favorite moments with the Legends and his family, making his impending demise evident. He used the time drive as an explosive to stall Mallus and said his goodbyes to both Gideon and the team, particularly Sara Lance. You had your ups and downs, but I will miss you Captain. Hopefully, you didn't actually die and will return one day in a different time period filming movies. One can hope.
Damien Darhk died again tonight. Ray took Damien back to the moment Mallus took over Nora's body, hoping they could save Nora and stop the demon from getting out. They sort of succeeded. Damien instead gave up his life to give his daughter a second chance at life and became the vessel for Mallus in her place. He died doing a noble deed for his daughter, and I hope this death is permanent, but you never know with Arrowverse shows.
After escaping Mallus and hiding out in the Wild West, Sara comes up with a plan to find new totem bearers, believing the Legends aren't equipped to wear them. Amaya fights her on this and insists they are worthy. They just need to figure out the proper way to use the six totems together and not individually. This leads to Amaya and Nate going on a spirit quest to the original bearers for answers, learning the totem bearers needed to join hands in a circle to create their avatar... think Buffy season four when Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Giles merged together to defeat Adam. It's like that but way cuter!
Because they (Sara, Zari, Amaya, Wally, Nate, and Mick) ended up merging to become a powerful Bebo, the adorable stuffed doll that kept popping up throughout this season. The one worshiped by the Vikings in an earlier episode. This super being fighting against a time demon was one of the best things Legends pulled off... once Nate thought of the pure and good thing, there was no going back.
To help combat Mallus' followers on the ground: the pirates, the Vikings, and the Romans... threats the Legends dealt with throughout the season, Ava recruited Jax (who's married and has an adorable kid), Helen of Troy, who became an Amazon warrior, and Kuasa (who became the new Vixen somehow?). Helen was my favorite returning character because she was a literal Wonder Woman... a warrior trained from the actual Themiscyra. She took out so many of Mallus' forces.
I enjoyed the Jonah Hex and Zari romance they decided to throw in. It was incredibly weird but it was adorable to see Sara make fun of her for it. Hex gave Zari his favorite hat as a parting gift, that is so romantic! More of that please in future appearances.
Amaya left the Waverider and returned to Zambasi. She and Nate said goodbye, and I hope that is the last we see of her as a series regular. She's been an okay character for me during season two, but this season, I did not like the direction her character took.
In the aftermath, the Time Bureau returned everyone to their proper times, erased memories, and arrested Nora Darhk for the crimes she committed. Ray, having a soft spot for her, gifted her with a time stone. He wanted to give her the second chance her father died for. Here's hoping Nora returns at some point next season too.
The Legends finally returned to Aruba 2018 for a vacation, where they wanted to go at the end of season two and beginning of season three. Mick hated the company, but the rest of the team didn't care. This is where Gary and John Constantine show up with a dismembered dragon's head, telling them they unleashed literal hell by breaking Mallus out.
Season four is going to dive into more magic territory... that's so exciting to me. John Constantine and Ava are joining the show as regulars too, so expect them to appear way more often.
I thought the episode was a fantastic way to conclude the season... the show can get away with a lot if you hadn't noticed. Legends is definitely the number one Arrowverse show of the year, and no matter what the shows did at this point, it wouldn't change my mind. You can't top a dramatic fight scene between Bebo and a demon... you can't do it.
