The Flash 4x17 'Null and Annoyed" Review
The Flash came back from hiatus. Yay? Not sure how to feel anymore. It was a long couple weeks, but Team Flash is ready to get back to business. Before getting into the review, I should express how I feel about the current fourth season: it's been pretty rough and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The first half of the fourth season showed great promise, but the second half is starting to wear me down.
Tonight's episode was okay but the surprise twist almost made up for it. Almost.
My review:
The central plot of the episode involved Barry getting tired of Ralph's humorous approaches to crime fighting. Barry wants to stay serious to defeat DeVoe and stop his mysterious plan with the Bus Metas, but Ralph keeps goofying around.
Then this new Bus Meta, Null, shows up and Ralph continues messing around. It's driving the Scarlet Speedster nuts. It takes a pep talk with Iris West-Allen and a heart to heart with Ralph for Barry to see he needs to stop being so damn controlling. He and Oliver Queen need to work on their leadership skills. Seriously guys! Get your acts together.
I enjoyed Ralph in this episode. More than usual. We got more insight on his personality and his background... which helps us understand him a lot more. He's a great addition to Team Flash, and I hope he stays on beyond season four because Team Flash needs to shake up their rankings.
Speaking of changing up the team's dynamics, Breacher returns in this episode requesting Cisco's help. His powers fail him during a battle against vampires (yes! I love vampires!) and he needs Vibe's brains to restore them to full power. After looking into the problem, Caitlin and Cisco discover he's old... like really old... the reason his powers don't work. Caitlin suggests telling Breacher the truth. But Cisco, who values his life, decides to lie and gives him fake pills for his lost powers. What could go wrong?
A lot. Breacher, thinking his powers are back, returns to fight the vampires and almost gets himself killed in the process. Cisco luckily jumps in and saves him. I loved how Cisco tried to use a sunlight gun on the vampire, but it doesn't work. Classic! In the end, Breacher learns the truth, retires from being a bounty hunter, and recommends Cisco take his place.
Excuse me?! Cisco might consider leaving the team? This is madness! Please don't leave Vibe. Take Iris instead.
Harry abuses the thinking cap, obsessed with becoming smarter than The Thinker. He wants to perfect the damn thing and blames himself when he couldn't predict every single move Null made in the episode. Then the season one feels began....
He takes the thinking cap to the Time Vault, plugs the thing in where the Reverse Flash suit used to be, and activates Gideon. At this point, I was freaking out. So many theories zoomed through my head: Is he Eobard Thawne? Is he trying to become Thawne by absorbing his knowledge? Thawne has to be involved somehow right? That scene got me believing in the impossible again.
DeVoe and his wife were also in this episode hanging out in their pocket dimension. She figured out DeVoe was messing with her brain, for the millionth time apparently, but he continues making her forget. She is stuck there without any means of escaping. Poor wife.
I thought this episode was pretty rough. But it ended fantastically, bringing us yet another mystery. I think the problem with this season is the mysteries. There are too many of them: DeVoe's plan which should be revealed by now, Mystery Girl, the remaining Bus Metas, and they added another one with Harry Wells and Gideon.
Next week Team Flash will finally confront DeVoe in his lair. Maybe that'll shed some light on his endgame and why he needs these specific Bus Metas. Comment below and let me know your thoughts on the latest episode.
Thanks for tuning in! Gotta run! (pun intended)
