Supernatural 13x18 "Bring 'Em Back Alive" Episode Review
Going into the latest episode, I had a lot of expectations. Dean and Ketch would rescue Mary and Jack, Sam and Castiel would fix Gabriel, and then whatever Lucifer was going to do. While disappointed Jack and Mary weren't rescued from Apocalypse World this week, I was happily delighted to see Charlie again! Even if it's a different version of the same character.
Spoilers ahead! My episode review is here:
Dean changed objectives the second he saw Charlie and decided to rescue her from her Angel captors, who want to torture her for information on Jack and Mary. Ketch thinks this is a waste of time, but I don't care and neither does Dean. This leads to a heart to heart between the two men on how Dean failed the original Charlie and how he failed to save her like everyone else in his life. I hated Charlie's death and felt Dean's pain when he opened up to Ketch about his regrets. Charlie deserved better, and I'd be damned if I had to see her die again too.
After this conversation, they storm the place where she's about to get executed and kill a bunch of angels over there, saving Charlie 2.0. She thanks them and gets filled in on all the nonsense about other worlds. With their 24 hour portal closing, Dean jumps through but leaves behind Ketch and Charlie 2.0 to continue the search for Jack and Mary.
Sam and Castiel are focused on fixing Gabriel, who is broken through years of torture at Asmodeus' hand. We learned through Angel writing on the wall how Gabriel faked his death all the way back in season five... of course he did through illusion trickery and escaped to Monte Carlo. He lived with numerous porn stars, Castiel said that went on for awhile, until he somehow got captured by Asmodeus. Castiel cannot heal an archangel and tries to get his brain working at least. Sam manages to get through to Gabriel through one of his famous family speeches in time for the Prince of Hell's assault on the bunker.
They managed to kill all the demons who broke inside the bunker except Asmodeus. Castiel and Sam nearly die, but Gabriel, returning to his former glory, comes back at full power and kills Asmodeus, putting an end to the Prince of Hell forever. Afterwards, Gabriel thanks them for saving him but decides he wants to go back to his life of not caring about the world. He teleports out, but I'm sure we'll see him again.
Dean returns and gets filled in on what happened. His anger reached a limit and he knocks things over, hating that something happens every time they get close to solving the season problem. Without Gabriel and his grace, they can't open the portal again. Sam and Castiel watch Dean break down with saddened expressions, knowing they have no words to comfort the guy.
Lucifer also appeared in the episode. He has been doing nothing. He uses Heaven to track down his son but has not lived up to any of his promises yet about creating more angels or restoring their wings. Because he lied about it to secure the throne. Good start to being the new God, Luci. That won't blow up in your face later. His moments playing God by listening to prayers and his interactions with some Priests put a smile on my face though. He didn't do much in this episode except give us the humorous moments to balance out the seriousness of everything else going on.
I enjoyed the return of Gabriel and Charlie. I'm surprised they keep finding ways to drag out Mary and Jack's return to Prime Earth. And when is Michael going to invade? I think he needs to have a more important presence moving forward, especially with Asmodeus out of the picture. Thank goodness someone killed him. Too many villains on this show.
This episode was an okay one filled with nostalgia for returning characters, but overall it seemed pretty rough. I think putting Jack on the other Earth was a mistake. He's an important character this season and he's been gone for too long.
Comment below and let me know your thoughts on the latest episode. It was great seeing Charlie again right? I love her so much. Please stay well, Charlie 2.0. Thanks for reading!
