Marvel’s Agents of Shield 5x16 “Inside Voices” Episode Review
I'm really glad I rewatched AoS season one because the ending with Raina and Ian Quinn would've gotten me confused. So if you don't remember, that's okay, I wouldn't have either. Season one was so long ago. Let's focus on the latest episode review:
Hale is trying to get Creel to merge with the gravitonium but he ends up flashing back to another season one moment involving Franklin Hall. If you don't remember, Coulson pushed the guy into a pool of gravitonium back in season one. Creel keeps hearing voices in his heads, one of them definitely being Hall. These flashes and annoying voices cause Creel to confront Coulson in his cell, which ends with them teaming up to save General Talbot, who is being tortured into insanity.
The alarms go off and Ruby (Dove Cameron) runs off to stop their escape. Ruby is such an amazing character and her eventual confrontation with Daisy will be one for the ages. Who will be the Destroyer of Worlds? Right now, I'm betting my money on Daisy, but Ruby wants it more than anything. She trained her whole life and her whole existence relies on her obtaining that title.
Creel stays behind to hold off Ruby while Coulson and Talbot escape using the alien machine, teleporting them to some snowy area on Earth. The fight scene between Creel and Ruby is a piece of work. I enjoyed every minute of it, seeing them go at each other's throats. If Hale hadn't intervened, Ruby probably would've killed the guy. But they still need him.
My favorite plot of the episode involved the Invincible Three: Jemma, Fitz, and Yo-Yo. They believe they are invincible because Deke exists, their grandson, and Yo-Yo saw herself in the future at the Lighthouse. I think this flawed idea of thinking will backfire considering they are trying to change the future? Maybe...
Jemma and Yo-Yo plan to break Fitz out of his cell to get his help in finding Coulson. But Daisy left Mack in charge of Fitz's cell and refuses to let him out for any reason. This forces Jemma to prove how invincible she really is by drinking random liquids hoping the one she drinks isn't poison. Her theory is that she can't die because she has to live long enough to give birth to Deke's mother.
Jemma's performance scared the crap out of me and Mack, even Fitz! Then she began to react to the poison and collapse, prompting Mack to let Fitz out to save her life. After Mack opens the door, Yo-Yo uses her super speed to trap her boyfriend inside and Jemma gets up off the floor. She pretended to only drink the poison to fool Mack but dumped one of the other vials to prove the poisonous one was among her choices. A risk taker that one! Everybody watch out for the Invincible Three. They are not messing around here.
Daisy and May go find Robin, the young inhuman who can draw the future. She is still in a horrible state of seeing awful things and stops drawing after awhile. Once she sees May though, her future mother figure, she resumes drawing and gives the team insight on Coulson and Talbot's location: it looks similar to where they ended up with the mountains and the trees.
This episode is setting up a lot for what's to come while also destroying the team: Coulson is gone, Daisy is in charge, the Invincible Three think they're... well invincible... and nobody on the team except them trust Fitz. The ending opened up a lot of possibilities: Ian Quinn and Franklin Hall are alive inside the gravitonium. Season one characters I would've forgotten about if I hadn't recently rewatched. I'm excited to see where this leads.
