Station 19 1x06 "Stronger Together" Episode Review
Seriously give this show a chance. If you enjoy Grey's Anatomy, you will enjoy this show.
The buddy system is critical in this episode. It is also important for the test Andy and Jack take to win the Captain position for Station 19. The test is called "The Incinerator" and it's a pretty tough one to pass: people can even die. Someone died when Andy's father took the test.
Andy and Jack decide to carpool there, which is weird, but it saves them on gas. Andy's Father and Maya do not think it's a good idea, but she doesn't care. Ryan comes over before Andy leaves and passes her a bouncy ball, something they give to each other for good luck. It gets awkward when Jack arrives. I'm Team Ryan but undecided on which girl. Maya or Andy?
The car ride gets more awkward when Jack tells Andy they need to stay out of each other's ways. I don't understand why he would say something like that considering they have to drive there together and then drive home together. I guess they really wanted to save gas money.
They're shocked when they arrive to the test and find dozens of other candidates there. Soon they find out all of them are going for the Station 19 Captain position. It is the only one available, which raises the stakes for Jack and Andy. While Andy and Jack each want the position, they do not want an outsider taking over their home more. Thus they join forces to make sure at least one of them becomes Captain.
Chief Frankel gives out the details of the test: a team of four enter a warehouse, each member taking turns as Captain, to take out the fires and rescue the human dummy trapped inside. Of course, every situation is different for each candidate to see how they work as leading member.
Jack and Andy are grouped together in addition to newcomers Cole and Charlotte.
The first round goes to Cole. He sticks with Jack for most of his drill and puts Andy and Charlotte in "lady roles" calling them "hon" every chance he got. What a dick. He saves his dummy, but the way he treated the girls differently was not okay in my book. Dick.
Charlotte takes charge in the next round. She is wild and takes incredible risks to get the job done. At first, it seemed like Andy and her were bonding, but all bets were off when Andy called her out on her recklessness. Her methods, while dangerous, earned Charlotte the highest record on saving the dummy. She also warns Andy to watch her back.
Round three commences.
Jack is up as Captain for this exercise. They take out the flames and search for the dummy, following the book. After two or three sweeps of the building, Jack pulls Andy aside to run something by her. He wants to leave the building because he thinks the dummy isn't there. Andy agrees with his decision and all four run out of there without saving anyone.
Chief Ripley tells Jack no one else figured out that trick in five years. There indeed was no dummy inside the warehouse. I felt like that was some trickery but figured it would work out for him because the plot needs one of them to succeed.
Last round is Andy. The entire place is filled with smoke from the last three rounds and everyone is running blind in there. Andy has the group crawl on the ground, hanging onto each other, to make sure they can move around and to keep each other safe. Then the roof breaks and hits Cole. I think the exercise is over at this point.
But Andy simply tells her team to get Cole to safety so she can save the dummy. If this were a real situation, she'd do everything she could to save everyone. Jack follows her because the buddy system and they rescue the dummy. Instead of being praised, Andy is reprimanded for her reckless decision.
Andy is no longer in the running, which I agree with. I don't think Andy is ready to become Captain yet and having Jack be the one in charge first would generate more story for him. If he lost the position, he implied heavily he'd leave the station. I don't want him to go anywhere.
Back at Station 19, Travis is the one in charge and loves it. Can he somehow become the Captain in the end? That would be super funny because he seems pretty good at it.
Vic is still dealing with her fear of fire. Ben plays more supportive role this episode to her problem and tries to get her to tell the team. He's been trying to get her to talk about it since the blue fire episode. She insists she will be fine. The alarm goes off and the team heads out to rescue a girl in a pothole.
A girl named Piper got her foot stuck in a pothole. She is almost ran over by a truck, but Vic steps in and covers her. The truck swerves and nearly hits them. Piper is grateful and starts talking about the girl she loves. Piper was on the way to tell her how she feels before her friend moved to New York. Then the foot in the pothole happened.
Piper's friend sees her and runs to check on her. Piper confesses her feelings and they kiss. So romantic! Travis tells the team to pull her leg right out because digging her out is taking too long. They yank her out and get her to the hospital immediately.
This inspires Vic to tell everyone about her fear of fire that she kept quiet about for weeks after the blue fire incident. She doe not expect the reaction they gave her. They supported her as a team and offered to help her get pass this. They also agreed to keep it from Andy and Jack because they would be forced to report it given their captain status.
When Andy arrives home looking to her dad for comfort, he is nowhere to be found. I have watched so much TV and movies, I truly believed she'd find him lying on the floor or dead or not in a good place. Thank goodness this did not happen. This kind of stuff usually happened on Grey's too.
Andy's father starts puking, getting sicker like Bailey told him in last week's episode, and decides to go visit her at Grey Sloan to get proper help. I'm glad he came to his senses.
Things are heating up now that Andy is out of the running. I wonder who will be the new Captain of station 19 by the end of the season. Four more episodes left until the finale!
