Grey's Anatomy 14x20 "Judgement Day" Episode Review
I cannot believe this episode happened. And that I watched it on 4/20.
It was both hilarious and a great way to move the plot forward into the upcoming finale. Most of our doctors ate some delicious cookies, an intern got fired, and the name Harper Avery became forever tainted after 14 seasons hearing about this great man. It also landed on the day this surgical contest started for our doctors at Grey Sloan.
Spoilers ahead:
Everyone gathers to watch the proposals for the contest while Arizona hands out some cookies (given as a gift from the lesbian parents for helping them with the fake cancer scam) for the doctors to eat. Jackson, Catherine, Bailey, April, Arizona herself, DeLuca, Alex, Maggie, and Vik ate the cookies before the proposals began. Once Arizona learned they were laced with weed, she immediately tells Meredith and Jo.
The proposals are put on hold. Meredith tells everyone it was because the cookies were laced with rat poison but pulls aside some of the affected to tell them the truth. Arizona freaking out over the rat poisoning had me rolling. They are supposed to stay put in the room until the effects wear off.
This leads to Meredith and Jo telling the interns to take on more responsibilities, but Vik lies about his drugged state. I got angry he did this because he was putting himself and others endanger for working under the influence. This intern ended up hurting himself when he freaked out over a patient needing a chest tube and knocked into a crash cart.
Vik confesses to Richard Webber about eating a cookie and lying about it. He got fired on the spot. Webber does not tolerate such behavior and neither would I. At least the other doctors took responsibility.
The other doctors were told to stay put in that room, but only April listened. Maggie ran off wanting to be alone because she never got high before. Arizona followed her, and Jackson and Catherine ran off to have their confrontation over Harper Avery.
Arizona, Maggie, and DeLuca ended up in a room together. DeLuca hallucinated Sam for the rest of the episode. He cried for her when she eventually disappeared and it hurt to see him in so much pain. Arizona talks to Maggie about Carina but somehow talks about Callie.
I think Arizona is going to fight for Callie again and that will be her exit. Every episode review I will keep coming up with theories because I'm not over her leaving the show.
Meredith goes to collect Bailey when she starts freaking out in surgery. Luckily, Meredith and Jo get there before Bailey kills the patient. In the middle of leaving the room though, Bailey accidentally hit Meredith's hand with the door.
This results in Meredith being unable to finish Bailey's surgery because her hand is compromised and Jo has to step in despite never having done this type of procedure. Meredith tells Jo she can do the operation without assistance, but Jo isn't so sure. Jo decides to use Webber's cancer pen to identify where exactly to cut and ends up saving that patient's quality of life. Good job for not messing up!
Jackson learns his grandfather's secret: he sexually assaulted 13 women and Catherine covered it up to protect the family legacy. This ruined the women's careers, but Catherine ensured they got payouts because that was all she could for them at the time. She wasn't as strong then to stand up for them, but she is now. The two of them planned to get a head of this scandal.
Bailey goes to the stoner room and meets with April, who is paranoid about being high. The room spinning helps make the experience more vivid for the audience. I love that they included that aspect during their scenes together. April, unable to keep the secret she overheard about Harper Avery, tells Bailey about it and then Meredith.
Also fun fact: Bailey is selling her project for the contest to a sex toy company and plans on getting rich. I love it!
Meredith is furious about Harper Avery and questions her past in addition to her reward, having recently won a Harper Avery, and confronts Jackson and Catherine about this. They also reveal Marie was one of the women assaulted and that was the reason Ellis Grey took her name off. In order to win her Harper Avery.
Outside the hospital, Owen gets his foster baby and Amelia is there to help him out. She brings High Alex with her because she doesn't trust him around her expensive stuff in the lab. High Alex was the best; he ate everything and made weird comments about everything "smelling like Owen".
The trio go out to Meredith's house to steal baby supplies because Owen was unprepared for the baby's arrival. He is overwhelmed and wonders if this was the right decision. Amelia supports him all the way and offers to stay the night to help him out. He immediately accepts and it looks like those two may get back together after all.
This was a fun episode to watch but also a strong plot-moving episode as it slowly destroys what it means to have a Harper Avery: the prize everyone sought after since the beginning of the show. Cristina was nominated for one, Ellis Grey won two, and Meredith recently won her own. Now the award is tainted and hopefully the hospitals do not follow suit.
