Supernatural 13x19 "Funeralia" Episode Review
Hey all. I think I'm getting tired of the 13th season. Alt. Michael is a threat, but it's all talk at this point. We haven't seen enough of him for us as an audience to take him seriously. They're dragging the rescue mission way too long here. I thought Jack and Mary, or at least Jack, would've escaped back to Earth-1 at this point. But Rowena returned in tonight's episode and she's always a load of fun.
Spoilers Ahead for my review:
The episode opens with Rowena at a party, talking to the Winchesters and Castiel about getting her help on locating Gabriel. But she's too busy literally roasting people alive to care. This presents the Winchesters with another problem they gotta deal with... like they already have enough on their plates, why not add more?
Castiel decides to ask the angels for help in locating Gabriel. Dean thinks it's a bad idea because all the angels want to kill him, but Castiel thinks its worth a shot.
Sam and Dean go off to find Rowena, but are joined by a reaper in the backseat. This reaper, Jessica, was assigned to monitor the Winchesters by Death Billie for some reason. She mentions everything she's seen the boys do, including SAM'S EXTENSIVE HAIR PRODUCTS! Moose is exposed finally! But Dean's gross for having a backup cheeseburger hanging around his room for emergencies.
Jessica mentions to the boys that Rowena is not only killing people but also reapers because those people are dying before their time. If she continued on this killing spree and throwing off the grand design, Death Billie will have to hit the reset button: a new plague or war to start over pretty much. Yeah let's try to prevent something like that.
This is where Dean and Sam come in, particularly Sam. Jessica confides to the boys that in every version of Rowena's death, Sam is the one who does the deed. He is the one who always kills her... that's heavy information to carry around.
Rowena eventually calls the boys back... they've been calling her nonstop since the episode's opening... and all three of them plus her bodyguard meet at a bar. She explains her evil plan to them: to get Death to resurrect Crowley. Rowena regrets everything she's done to her son since he was human and wants to make amends, but in order to do that, she needs Death to resurrect him.
Sam and Dean try to reason with her, but she won't listen. She ends up kidnapping Sam while Dean fights and kills her bodyguard. Something that impresses Jessica who was no help whatsoever. Reapers are not allowed to get physically involved.
Billie eventually meets Rowena when Sam's life is threatened. Billie will not bring back Crowley and that angers Rowena into attacking her. She is obviously not affected and leaves, but promises Dean she will come back.
The Winchesters ask Rowena once again to help them find Gabriel. The episode ends without a definite answer, but I'm sure she will join forces with them.
Castiel spent the episode learning about heaven's situation. He enters his former home without problems because a drunk angel is stationed and doesn't care anymore. The lights keep flickering on and off. I thought Lucifer was messing with Castiel at first, waiting for the archangel to jump out and scare him.
But Lucifer never appeared. I guess he left heaven after what happened last week. Or he's hiding. But it's more likely he bailed because he clearly hated playing God.
After waiting forever, Castiel tells his fellow angels that Gabriel is alive and they need help tracking him down. They consider helping, whispering to each other, but do not seem keen on leaving heaven. I was still thinking Lucifer was here running things and waiting for that sneak attack, but it never happened.
Instead Naomi returned to the fold. She survived the drill to the head but needed time to recover. She explains to Castiel the heaven and angels situation... the flickering lights were not caused by Lucifer but rather the lack of angels charging heaven. The angels are down to 9... 9 angels are left! 11 if you count the archangels!
That's insane! Castiel looked heartbroken to hear his kind were in the single digit mark. They are close to extinction and so is heaven. And if heaven falls, all the souls they harbored will fall to Earth and those souls will wander as ghosts. That sounds not good!
This is why the remaining angels cannot leave heaven and need Gabriel to help save them all. You know, an archangel that isn't Lucifer. Naomi entrusts this task to Castiel and closes heaven's gates. Cass is saddened and is more determined to find Gabriel.
This episode seemed off to me, but the last few episodes should ramp up the stakes and pacing. I did enjoy Naomi's return and Rowena being Rowena... but I'm so tired of the delays to the main mission. Just open the door, go save Jack and Mary, then seal the door forever. Alt Michael is villain for next season at this point... I'm going with that.
I need some pie.
