Supernatural 14x09 "The Spear" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
The mid-season finale did not disappoint. The majority of the episodes leading up to it felt disjointed, but a lot of the plot elements returned to tie things up. Dark Kaia returned and like the title of the episode suggested, so does her spear. Jack’s adjustment to being alive again was a nice “rite of passage” into Team Free Will.
All of them have officially died and come back to life.
Castiel’s secret about The Empty is going to have consequences. It was only addressed in the beginning of the episode with Jack, but the look of guilt on his face when Dean mentioned how they saved Jack without strings… that’s going to hurt.
Garth returned in this episode. I was scared for him. He’s always been the odd one out in the hunter world and the light we’d occasionally see. A part of me prayed to Chuck that Garth make it out alive and when he swallowed the archangel grace potion, I had a feeling he was done or was going to become a sleeper agent.
He became a sleeper agent, feeding Sam false information subconsciously. They knocked him out, but there is no known cure for Garth’s condition. I hope they find a way to save the guy and he has a daughter! Balls! Let’s put this situation on the backburner!
Dean made a promise to Dark Kaia in exchange for the spear. He’ll get Jack to take her back to The Bad Place. This is a lie considering Jack has no powers anymore, but Dean is determined to do whatever it takes to kill Alternate Michael. He is happy, focused, and confident that they can slay the archangel.
The march to face the villain was a nice moment. The music “Ode to Joy” in the background and the impossible odds they’re up against. The boys have face similar “impossible odds” before, but it adds to the feel of a mid-season finale. The past eight episodes have built up to this “final” battle. Even Alternate Michael was impatient waiting for them to arrive.
Alternate Michael had a plan the entire time. He was ahead of them and prepared for their arrival, especially Dean’s. He found a way around “yes” by leaving the door open in Dean’s body. It’s why Dean had those flashes and dizziness. The reasoning for Alternate Michael leaving was simple: he wanted to give Dean a taste of freedom before ripping it away.
Dean is broken and drowning once again in his own body. Alternate Michael wanted to put a rest to his resistance and broke the spear in half. Then he pulls out the “Thanos Snap” and the screen goes blank. Wow! I knew the Dean possession ended way too early… I should’ve had more faith in the writers and the plot of the season.
I am too anxious. We have to wait until January to see what’s going on next. But one thing is for sure: John Winchester is confirmed to return in the 300th episode. It’s the best news to hear! Haven’t seen Sam and Dean’s dad since the Season Two finale. Twelve years ago… that’s way too long to go without Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Lots to look forward to in 2019.
