Supergirl 4x04 "Ahimsa" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please Read with Caution.
Supergirl is improving with each passing episode. The message of this episode is: no violence and the regulation of rules. J’onn and Alex struggled the most with this because of their new roles in the upcoming battle. Kara is sidelined for most of the episode because kryptonite was infecting the air. I think this helped fleshed out the struggles each character is going through on how to fight politically against the new threat.
J’onn and Manchester Black got paired up for the episode. Manchester is Fiona’s fiance, and he enlists J’onn’s help in finding her. He is a strong addition to the cast and will probably continue to have a presence on the show after what happened to Fiona. I was pretty sure she died in the season four premiere, but I was wrong. She died in this episode… damn we need to treat our POC women characters better. Seriously, this is an outrage.
Brainy and Lena are paired to solve the kryptonite issue. Their dynamic on human emotions was well-done, and I wouldn’t mind seeing them together more often. The speech on putting your feelings in boxes was disturbingly on point.
James Olsen returns as Guardian, but he is not punished for breaking the law. He is rewarded with publicity and getting deputized by the Police. This is because Agent Liberty spun his actions into helping his movement, corrupting Guardian as a symbol of Anti-Alien. I thought this was a nice twist to the storyline, making his role as Guardian more relevant than ever.
I thought the Iron Man-like Supergirl Suit was too much. It was a good method to keep her sidelined for the episode, which is appreciated. The show is called Supergirl, but there are other characters on this show who need development too.
Alex is struggling with all the rogue DEO agents like Jensen and breaks the rules to control the current situation, disobeying the POTUS. This leads to the President sending down the Colonel to keep an eye on Director Danvers and her activities.
Mercy and Otis Graves are killed in this episode, but Agent Liberty/Ben Lockwood is still making moves against the world. He has infected Jensen, the rogue DEO Agent, with a parasite to level the playing field against aliens.
Red Daughter Kara is addressed in this episode. Once again, this is brief plot line, but it shows that she went into a small containment when kryptonite got into the atmosphere. She is ready to resume her training now that the air is clean.
Overall, an excellent episode compared to the past three seasons. Seriously, I’m so proud of this show for finally figuring it out. At least for the most part. Plus, it’s still too early to praise the current season.
