Charmed 1x04 "Exorcise Your Demons" Episode Review
Major spoilers are included in this episode review. Please Read with Caution.
This episode has put the show on the right track. We got the emotional weight, carried by Mel again, but she needs to carry it. There were instances of legit campy humor… Maggie is the best with that and a demon stuffed in the back of a trunk didn’t hurt either. The consequences of the girls becoming the Charmed Ones are also addressed in this episode.
The Elders are introduced in this episode too. Charity is a fun character, who is a high-level witch with a business that promotes “women supporting women”. She is also good friends with the mother of the Charmed Ones, who was also an Elder. Harry respects her and has a history with this particular Elder.
Charity believes the Harbinger needs to be killed on the full moon using the Power of Three and some daggers. Mel wants to save Angela Wu, the vessel, but it’s believed that her soul is no longer there. This is proven false, but Charity is determined to eliminate the threat before The Source rises.
Macy is on board with killing the Harbinger, not letting her emotions cloud her judgment. But when Charity discloses how she used a spell to remove the mother’s emotions of abandoning Macy, Macy switches sides and joins her sisters in saving Angela Wu. A talk with her current love interest Galvin also helps steer her in the right direction.
Maggie is struggling with her school work and upcoming midterms. This is a classic Buffy The Vampire Slayer tactic with balancing school life and killing demons life. Her Kappa Sister Lucy offers her boyfriend Parker to help with the immediate study sessions. This leads to character tension because Parker and Maggie have been crushing on each other since last week’s episode.
A kiss is shared between the two of them when he was about to see the demon action. Maggie regrets it happening and tells Parker that they can’t study together. She doesn’t want to risk hurting Lucy or her chances of getting into the Sorority.
The Power of Three Spell designed by their mother was a nice way to address their Latinx Heritage. The vanquishing spell was also enhanced by Maggie’s telepathic power, but it came at a high price. The causality of losing Trip, Niko’s partner, was devastating.
Charity used his unfortunate death to cover up the murders the Harbinger committed, which made Niko believe her partner was not the person she thought he was. This will bring tension to the romantic relationship, and it adds another layer to the secret Mel is already hiding from her. I think this adds more to Niko’s character arc too.
Angela Wu is saved but has no recollection of her time after waking up from the coma.
I was expecting Charity to reveal herself as a villain, but alas it did not happen. Instead, a man enters her elevator and compels her to give him the paint can holding the harbinger. We’re not done yet with this demon… and a new enemy is about to make his presence known… demon or warlock? We shall see next week on Charmed.
