This Is Us 3x09 "The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with Caution.
The show found its magic again. I cried, my heart melted, and I’m freaking out over the latest revelations. The identity of her is revealed (?) and Nick Pearson’s fate is uncovered. However, the reveals came at a cost. Beth and Randall might be in danger! Aah! I can’t comprehend the madness. My favorite couple is in trouble!
Let’s start with Nick Pearson. I can’t believe he is alive. It was in one of my theories but to live that close to the family and not contact them? Did Jack even know about his brother being alive? At this point, I wouldn’t be that surprised. Jack Pearson is a God after all.
Will Kevin’s next move be looking for his Uncle Nick? I certainly hope so. This inevitable meeting will change everything and potentially threaten the family’s memories of Jack.
Kevin and Zoe’s short time in the villa was a great parallel to the Vietnam flashback. The conversation between Kevin and the Vietnamese was amazing. They didn’t let the past between their dads interfere with their kindness or respect for one another. While they couldn’t find any information on Jack or the woman, they discovered Nicky Pearson didn’t die in the war.
Randall killed the campaign debate—oh my goodness. His opponent didn’t make it easy for him. I was entertained with his performance. However, the polls weren’t entertained and have determined that Randall will not win the election. This drives a wedge between our favorite couple.
Beth wants Randall to give up. She is overwhelmed by her job searching, Dejas’s desire to see her mother, and Tess’s coming out… I WILL GET TO THAT… Randall refuses to stop trying and breaks his promise to stop if she tells him to. Now, he sleeps on the couch and in the flash forwards, it does not bode well.
WHY DON’T YOU CALL HER, RANDALL?
I swear, if Beth and Randall are not together in the flash forwards, I’m going to get really upset. The love story of how they met… If that’s shown with how they separate… UGH I can’t even make sense right now. Although, Beth does seem to own a ballet company studio, so she’s successful again. Good for her.
The identity of “her” is revealed (?). I put the question mark because Beth said, “Randall’s mother”. Yes, it points to Rebecca. The birth mother is deceased, so there isn’t any other option. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure Randall’s biological mom is not alive.
Rebecca is “her”. She mentioned something to younger Tess about a condition she has in her wrists, so I wonder if that’s connected to the flash forward. Kate outed Tess to Rebecca, which was not cool, and the two of them got cold for a minute there. They did talk things out, but it might spell out trouble for their future. Older Tess was hesitant to visit “her”.
The first nine episodes of this season was not an easy ride. In my opinion, the show’s ability to make their weepy viewers cry has decreased dramatically. I watch to cry my eyes out, but until tonight’s episode, I can’t remember the last time I balled over a new episode.
I’ll see you all January. That was the fall finale.
