Charmed 1x06 "Kappa Spirit" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode. Please Read with Caution.
The reboot is not improving enough. I’ll say it. Six episodes into the series and the lack of focus, lazy writing, and campy-ness are not sitting well. This is review is for last week’s episode, due to my busy Thanksgiving week. I’ll have the latest episode review posted tomorrow and will provide a link here for those interested.
The Sisters are dealing with personal issues in this episode. Maggie is trying to make amends with Lucy after kissing Parker, Mel is distraught over erasing Niko and their relationship, and Macy investigates the mysterious symbol on Galvin. All their personal issues are relationship issues, but it kind of works in the sense that the stories flow naturally next to one another.
Mel is pushed to the background in the episode, mainly present to help Maggie’s story along. The two of them are even warped back in time to see their pregnant mother talk about Macy being potentially evil. This links back to the mysterious reason on why the Mother abandoned Macy in the first place. But all I could think about is why we didn’t get a whole episode on this time period (80’s). The 70’s episode from the original Charmed was fantastic, so I was stunned that they did a brief trip rather than explore it.
The monster of the week is a ghost. It is unleashed by Lucy and haunts her into committing suicide. The ghost, Brenda, wants revenge on those who wronged her. I think having different types of ghosts is a good approach, as it left the Sisters unprepared, which creates tension.
Macy and Harry investigate Galvin’s mark, which may be related to voodoo magic. Summer, Galvin’s girlfriend, is not liking Macy and tells her to back off after being nice in last week’s episode. The thought of Harry and Macy together is also stuck in my head. Ew.
We learn only Macy can see the symbol on Galvin’s back. She visits a voodoo priestess, who implies that she triggered Galvin’s protection symbol. There is a darkness inside Macy, but of course, the priestess does not elaborate on this horrible evil inside her. This is honestly the most interesting aspect of the episode and arguably the series, but it hasn’t been given much attention yet.
Let’s hope the newest episode changes that.
