Station 19 2x06 "Last Day on Earth" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode. Please Read with Caution.
After last week’s episode of yelling at Sullivan, father-son reunion, and a marriage separation, this latest episode largely focused on redefining the relationships between the main cast and the crumbling dynamic in the Station. Ben is hiding out at the Station after his separation from Miranda Bailey became official. For those who didn’t watch Grey’s Anatomy and solely watch Station 19, the flash montage of Ben and Miranda’s relationship from first meeting to their wedding was devastating to say the least.
Ben is going on too many runs too. Jack is going through the same thing with his runs but for having too much energy from his lack of sleep or night terrors. Dean is their buddy and doing everything he can to support these two guys. After learning from Ben about his marriage in the drive back from helping a woman unclog her hand from the sink drain, Dean gives him a big hug and invites him to live at the Boat House.
By episode’s end, Jack, Dean, and Ben are little big boys running happily together. This was too stinking cute… it was pure joy to watch them help each other out. This will help Ben get solid footing on this show and step off Grey’s Anatomy territory for quite awhile.
Ryan and his father are trying to reconcile. Ryan asks Andy for help, and they are waiting for his father to show up for coffee. He never shows up. I think Ryan and Andy are over… or I hope they are because I’m not into them anymore or her with Jack. She needs to change it up with someone else… like Captain Robert Sullivan.
More on that in a second…
Vic has slept with Chief Ripley and does not know what to do about it. She ends up talking to Jack without saying who the man is, and he helps her through her feelings. I don’t think these two had much of a chance to create a dynamic, but they work surprisingly well together. Jack likes teasing but means well, telling Vic to decide what she wants to do when Ripley ends up calling her.
Ryan’s father, Greg Tanner, ends up at the Station beaten up. Andy and Maya patch him up, but he refuses to go to the hospital for… obvious reasons. Ryan also stops by but is not interested in his excuses. He only wants Andy’s opinion on the man, which he gets when Andy yells at Greg for being a poor excuse of a parent and the damage he inflicted on Ryan growing up.
Greg ends up collapsing in the elevator after his talk with Ryan. Andy and Maya manage to save him and get him to the hospital. Ryan learns that Greg got hurt doing a noble thing and calls him “dad” after he wakes up. These two are on the path of recovery on all counts.
Andy and Maya keep getting called off to duty today. They’re assigned to Aid Car, which is a nice excuse to avoid “the talk” with Captain Sullivan. If you recall, Andy yelled at Sullivan for calling Maya out every chance he got during the CPR training.
First, they get to break through a wall to save a little girl (off-screen), getting themselves dirtied up, and then they scale a mountain to save a man and his tree. The scaling of the mountain is what the girls are most proud of because… that’s freakin’ badass thing.
I’m impressed they did that. Woo! They went down, back up, down, and then back-up with the victim. Andy and Maya are the best team… Glad they’re done fighting each other. It didn’t suit them, but character tension has to happen at some point on these type of shows.
Robert Sullivan asks Pruitt Herrera for help in bonding with the team. He realizes he can’t demand respect but must earn the respect from his team. Although Station 19 does respect him… out of fear, but respect nonetheless. Pruitt advises Sullivan to find the person who keeps the team together, the glue, and to get him/her on his side.
Sullivan tries bonding with the team too… talking to Jack and Vic causally about their social lives… which does not go well. His awkward smile breeds fear in them. This will take a lot of work… Good thing he has reached out to Andy about helping him reach the team through coffee.
Yeah… this sounds like Andy and Sullivan might become a romantic item. I’m reading between the lines… the show is sneaky for trying to pair these two up like this. I think it’s the romantic in me overthinking this, but then again, Chief Ripley and Vic are becoming a couple so this theory is not totally out there.
Overall, a well grounded episode with no real attention to the fire. Rather, their job is used as an excuse to avoid the emotional talks they would inevitably endure. I’m excited to see how all of this plays out.
