How To Get Away With Murder 5x07 "I Got Played" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please Read with Caution.
The aftermath of Nate Sr’s death is detailed. It’s cluttered in loads of bullshit that nobody on this show is buying. The officers are covering up what happened, and Annalise thinks the Governor “played her” by ordering the kill on Nate Sr. The scene between these two women was raw, her emotional plead to the jury was rawer, and a healthy reminder of why I continue to watch this show: Viola Davis is an excellent actress who can deliver her lines with such intensity: it leaves me with goosebumps!
The Governor also threatens Annalise with information about an “adoption”. Another mystery is brought to the storyline, and I hope it all connects back to Gabriel somehow. I don’t like how Laurel and Frank are the only two people who know his true identity, and the worst part is that they’re keeping it from us—the audience! I demand satisfaction—answers! I love using —!
How the show handles Annalise’s drinking is incredibly visceral. The drinking is hidden from the people she loves, but Bonnie manages to find proof at the bottom of the trash. She tells Frank about Annalise, who is shocked this happened but had a feeling Annalise would relapse at some point.
I theorize Gabriel is Annalise’s biological son. I don’t know they’ll reveal this, but that’s my best guess. If Gabriel were Bonnie’s, there would be more hints or interactions. At this point in the season, Bonnie and Gabriel had little to no scenes. I’m leaning on the latter because I don’t recall them being in the same scene at all.
After Laurel gave him the rejection, Gabriel simply moved on to Michaela, who is more than happy to get with him. I’m not caring Gabriel as a character or his mystery role. I think we’re missing too much on him… like we don’t have enough information on him to actually care or invest beyond the basic “who is this guy?”
Oliver and Connor plan a night out with the group to avoid thinking about the shitty world. We all need nights like this once in awhile. But the shit catches up with them when they kiss and a stranger calls them out for it. Connor attacks and defends his pride. Oliver has to be the one to stop the fighting to prevent Connor from getting too seriously hurt… this does explain why he has the cuts on his face in the flash forwards.
Overall, this episode has us prepared for the winter finale and to see who killed who and why Bonnie is helping to cover it up.
