How To Get Away With Murder 5x04 "It's Her Kid" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Read with Caution.
I think this episode was okay… but now I realize Viola Davis, Liza Weil, and Karla Souza are the only actresses I care about at this point. Their characters are compelling and strong-willed, at least Annalise and Bonnie… I just have a crush on Laurel, but her character is also going in an interesting direction toward motherhood.
The episode opened to the CLUB. There is no other name. Anyways, Annalise goes there to watch Tegan salsa, but does not wish to participate herself. Then we learn she went there to distract herself from Nate. Yeah, he told her that he’s looking into Bonnie and her missing child in last week’s episode, to get ahead of this based on Denver’s file.
Annalise gets rightfully angry with Nate… he does not have the right to mess with Bonnie’s trauma like this. This is a sensitive subject for Bonnie, who is struggling with this more as her relationship with Ron progresses. The consensual HR form was giving her a massive headache. Poor Bon Bon.
Then there’s Asher… I hate this kid, but I also feel for this kid. I thought this scene was fine until I realized he didn’t live with them. What was he doing there so early? Trying to make Michaela jealous is so stupid. Although, I did chuckle when he made sly remarks to her about the need for privacy in the bathroom… “I’ll let you poop”.
Annalise and Nate have some tension between them. They are prepping for his father’s case, which rests on one argument: an insanity one. She also learns that Nate failed to tell his dad that he must live in a mental institution if he were to win this case. This is a rough episode for Nate, but he’s the one who keeps making the mess.
Oliver and Frank have serious issues going on too. Oliver insists on learning why Frank is investigating Gabriel and his flip phone, only to get smacked with a lesser evil truth: he spies on everyone for Annalise. I know this is the truth because everyone is backing him up, but there is more to Gabriel than a simple background check.
I need Oliver to stop and be happy.
Back to the case of the week, Caplan & Gold are trying to get another big account. It is owned by racists… Ruthie’s Burgers is getting boycotted for their racist behavior. This is seen when the CEO arrives and DARES GO FOR ANNALISE’S WIG!
“You don’t need to touch it to know it looks good!” — this racist CEO messed up!
Nate goes to Bonnie’s sister’s house… which angers Annalise when she meets Bonnie for lunch. THIS IS NOT COOL, NATE! Annalise and Bonnie have the most unclear, insane, relationship in the entire series. It’s also what makes the dynamic work. They read each other and both got salads from the same place intending to share. They know each other so well!
But alas, Annalise cannot bring herself to tell Bonnie that her child is alive out there. She asks for some files instead. Bonnie has a right to know!
Gabriel is against working with a racist company who makes their money by discriminating against black and brown people, but Annalise shuts him down real quick. This guy has a lot of guts to keep messing with our core characters like this.
Tegan and Michaela are still on the “outs”. They’re portraying them like ex-lovers, which is really creepy, when Michaela really wants to be back in her professional good side. The professional and romantic boundaries on this show do not exist.
Michaela wants to blackmail the CEO into making them our clients. That is stupid plan, which Tegan tells her later… AFTER she gets Ruthie’s Burgers on board as clients, telling the CEO to step down and to make her the head of the legal team. Having an African-American woman as your lawyer will at least help hide the fact you’re racist.
Annalise convinces Nate Sr to say he wanted some cake to win themselves another trial. This works successfully thanks to Connor writing the defense for it. Annalise rewards him by making him second chair, but then he brought his “bitch boy problems” to her.
DAMN! VIOLA DAVIS IS A MASTERPIECE!
Connor loses the position and it goes to Gabriel instead. This guy is taking everything from them gradually. He took Asher’s spot and now Connor’s position. What is he up to?
Nate tells his dad he can’t stay with him after he gets released. This saddens Nate to the point that he cries in his car. I was hating you, but now I’m feeling for you. I hate this show so much. We gotta figure this crap out.
Annalise also spills Bonnie on everything involving her missing kid. Bonnie cries into the comfort of Annalise and wonders why Nate didn’t destroy the file like he said he would. Then Annalise tells her whatever Bonnie decides, she will follow through no matter what.
THEY ARE ALWAYS STICKING TOGETHER! LOVE IT!
Flash forward: my theory about Bonnie having a twin sister went out the window. We’ve seen her sister. She was played by a different actress. Bonnie does have Nate’s phone when Michaela tries to call him, and everyone is wondering where Oliver is. ARE THEY OKAY?
