Supernatural 14x01 "Stranger in a Strange Land" Episode Review
Major spoilers are included in this episode review.
Disclosure: the free image picture claims that is Michael the archangel. Things are open to interpretation. Anyways…
The 14th Season of this show has returned tonight! The “Highway to Hell” is sweet, the new logo is super angelic, and Sam is behind the wheel ready to save his brother. Again… I think this is the only show that can recycle the same storyline without shame. Sam saving Dean… Dean saving Sam… one of them dies or gets trapped somewhere or both… Let’s dive into it!
About three weeks have passed since the end of Season 13. Lucifer is dead, Alt. Michael has possessed Dean full-time, Jack lost his powers, and nobody has any idea where he is or what he’s planning for our world. Dean isn’t even present in the episode… Jensen Ackles playing someone other than Dean is interesting.
I think I like it. There are hints of “Dean” in Alt Michael’s mannerisms in my opinion or maybe I’m seeing things. I’ll examine Jensen Ackles closer in future episodes. I’m watching you, Jensen! Fair warning!
There is another interesting development I didn’t see coming. Nick (Lucifer’s vessel) is ALIVE! He has come back from the dead. This is unexpected and I wonder what the purpose of this is.
The tension is clearly present when Sam speaks to Nick about his time as Lucifer’s vessel and the uncomfortable Sam exhales when he enters / exits the room. It was a small scene, but it was palpable how much Sam dreaded the interaction.
Alt. Michael is going around and asking people “what they want?”. He does this to some poor man and then Sister Jo (Danneel Ackles). Whatever Alt. Michael told Sister Jo about his plans spooked her enough to call Sam. In the end, Alt. Michael teams up with a random vampire. There were mentions of vampires earlier in the episode, but I did not put that idea together.
Jack is struggling to figure himself out without his powers. Although Castiel said it’ll take time for his grace to recharge, he still wants to help. During the well-done fight scene between hunters and demons, he was totally knocked out. He feels useless without his gifts, and it takes a pep talk from Castiel to convince him he still has family.
I’m so proud of Castiel being a father.
Speaking of Castiel, I think they nerfed him again. The new demon Kip (Crowley wannabe) easily took Cass down with a couple of lower-level demons without much of a problem. Even Castiel admitted it was embarrassing how he got beat up. I’m glad they didn’t try to replace Crowley with Kip because I was not liking his attitude.
I think Alt Bobby is such a good addition. It’s essentially like getting OG Bobby back. He is taking care of Jack and creating a friendship with Mary Winchester. I want them together. It’s clear to me that Alt Bobby harbors some feelings. I hope he keeps coming around.
Not sure how long Dean will be gone. I hope at least until the mid-season finale, but then again, Sam and Dean are the heart of the show. It’ll be risky to keep Dean out of the game for such a long time. This is uncharted territory for Supernatural.
Comment and let me know how long you think Dean will be gone. I like theories.
