The Good Place 3x01 & 3x02 "Everything is Bonzer!" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Read with Caution.
Forkin’ Shirt Balls! We’re back to watch our favorite humans become better people! I enjoy how this show keeps reinventing themselves every season… Eleanor thought she didn’t belong in “The Good Place” (Heaven). Second season… Eleanor realized this was “The Bad Place”.
Third Season? Everyone is back on Earth with their original deaths prevented. This is forkin’ nuts, pal! But the show continues strong with its new premise and the new status quo for our humans trying to prove they can become better people.
Michael (demon who became better) starts the episode by returning to Earth to prevent the four deaths of Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason, creating a brand new timeline. The guard (Glee’s Mike O’Malley) who is nonchalant about letting Michael pass through the Earth portal multiple times to help bring the group together.
At least Michael brought the guard back some frog merchandise. The guard loves frogs.
This causes “The Bad Place” team to gain access to The Judge’s system and interfere in the experiment as well by sending Trevor to Earth.
I think the best part about the season 3 premiere is the parallels to how the show started. Eleanor and Chidi had different reasons for helping each other (his inability to say ‘no’ and Eleanor’s desperate need to stay in “The Good Place”). But now back on Earth, these two have a true desire to become better people without wanting some kind of reward.
My mind goes to the theme of the TV show Angel and how they handled the Shansu Prophecy. Do good because it’s the right thing, not because you want a reward in return. This is the grand lesson that The Good Place is trying to implement moving forward.
What good television filled with creativity, excellent dialogue, interesting characters, and moral lessons that are easy enough to digest. I also enjoyed Jason’s attempts to make a new dance crew and the excellent addition of Simone, Chidi’s new love interest. I can’t wait to see how that romance unfolds.
