How to Get Away With Murder 5x01 "Your Funeral" Episode Review
Major spoilers are included in this episode review. Read with Caution.
Gosh it feels good to have this show back on the air! Annalise Keating is back to teaching and ready to start over with her reputation somewhat redeemed. Before we get into that, we have a flash forward to analyze…
Oliver and Connor’s wedding is lit! Everyone, including Annalise, is dancing and having an amazing time. Then Frank shows up and ruins everything with his presence. Annalise talks to him and then slaps him after inferring that someone has indeed died. Then we got to the unknown victim, as we are looking through his/her eyes, as they are bleeding out in the snow.
This is in three months.
Back to the present, Gabriel Maddox, brand new series regular, is walking through campus and ready to take on Annalise’s new class. Annalise brutalizes the class by cutting the size in half and making them state their legal passions. Then she wants to hear them argue for the opposing side the next day. Shockingly, Maddox makes the cut.
Annalise is also on the job hunt, getting asked by every law firm to become partner since her case won against the Supreme Court. She is living the good life.
Bonnie is still working at the DA’s office and flirting with Miller, her new boss since Denver’s death. Nate wants her to leave and work at a new law firm, but Bonnie is scared of the files Denver left behind and might have shown to Miller.
Paranoid Bonnie is the Best Bonnie.
But she doesn’t notice when Nate takes her coffee cup to test her DNA next to the file that reads, “CHILD ALIVE”… I thought Gabriel Maddox was Annalise’s dead child, but now I have to rethink my theory here… Bonnie is the mother?!
The next day.
Annalise hears her class do their counterarguments. All of it was whatever until Maddox took the stage and declared all murderers are hopeless and once you’ve killed, there’s no way to redeem that… Close ups to all of the Keating 4 and Annalise herself. Damn.
Before she can hear Connor’s counterargument, she gets calls from all the law firms and cancels class for the day. All of them are pulling their offers because the governor is threatening the law firms and the clients if they hire Annalise. This is so bad!!
Laurel and Frank have sex after failing to find Baby Christoper’s giraffe, Nate and some random lady are having sex, and then Miller tries to kiss Bonnie but she stops him. There’s a lot of sex going on in this episode.
Oliver takes the Keating 4 to an old frat house and declares he wants everyone to move in. It takes a village to raise a child… this is weird, but everyone ultimately agrees to do this.
Frank is also looking up Gabriel Maddox. He knows the truth about the kid, but he doesn’t want anyone else to know. Frank keeps calling someone about him and that he’ll be taken care of soon enough… What is going on here?
Annalise also fights Caplan&Gold for a law clinic or something and ultimately gets it… now she can pick certain students to help her. I assumed Gabriel was going to be a part of the team, but I had no idea it would cost Asher his spot. She tells Asher that he can’t be hung up on Michaela and be on her team. It’s embarrassing as both a lawyer and a man. I 100% agree with that assessment.
Laurel and Frank break up after she moves out with Baby Christopher. Frank proposes to convince her to stay. Of course, she refuses. I think Laurel made the right decision to break things off… I agree with her friends. She was indeed using him.
The baptism was intercepted with other scenes like Bonnie’s DNA being a match and then Gabriel Maddox is shown next, Annalise learning only one partner wanted her at Caplan&Gold, then the wedding, and back to first-person perspective of the victim.
We see Baby Christopher out in the distance. Then Bonnie comes out and covers the victim’s mouth and eyes, closing the episode.
Bonnie is really willing to do anything for Annalise, even if she doesn’t want Bonnie to do said thing. This season is going to be an interesting one.
