Not going to lie. That’s a lot of characters that were thrown into the school setting. I have no idea how I managed to stabilize how all this together, but I told the story for the most part.
I used the beginning of this season-long arc to cliffhanger the players in an effective way. I’ll get to that at the end obviously.
The second session of the new campaign was really fun. All the players, myself included, had an amazing time. The Hero Academy setting, the teachers and students that they’re interacting with, and the overall “HERO” theme is working out for everyone involved. It’s incredible how much we’ve learned about Dungeons & Dragons in just nine months. We haven’t been playing 20+ years like most people in this game, but we’re getting the hang of it.
The name “K-Gundam” became alive because the player wanted to change the name, but he didn’t want to break the “K” theme we had going. So, we added a “K-” at the beginning and said it was silent. The English language, am I right?
Also, the team name is now K-Krew and not K-Squad. They decided to change it because honestly… K-Krew sounds better.
Anyway, now that we settled all the changes so far, let’s dive into the session recap:
The K-Krew, consisting of Kai-Ku, Killion, and K-Gundam, wake up but have no idea when classes start. They look at the clock, and it’s currently 7:30 in the morning. K-Krew realizes that class might have started already. They soon learn that is certain when Hall Monitors, Menos Blue students given authoritative power, arrive to take them to their homeroom.
Nobody tries anything and goes with the Hall Monitors. Kai-Ku has a random Slurpee, but nobody bats an eye about it. Kai-tick Slackers aren’t worth the Hall Monitors’ time.
The Hall Monitors drop the K-Krew off at homeroom, and leave. The K-Krew enter class late and find the only available seats at the front. They causally walk up there, and take their seats. K-Gundam, being a huge War Forged Giant, rolls to see if he can sit down at the chair. K-Gundam rolls a NAT 20 and manages to not break that chair. Kai-Ku takes a seat next to him. Killion takes the other end. They soon learn that the professor is tardy as well.
Kai-Ku, Killion, and K-Gundam chat for a bit about their characters since they’re still strangers to each other. Kai-Ku mostly acts really impressed with K-Gundam’s robot design and Killion’s money. A true Deku character.
How my D&D group interacts with each other is so much different from their time as the Enforcers. The players’ characters are starting to become friends, and they rarely separate from each other. Splitting the party happened only once during the entire session, and it was only for two minutes. I thought that was awesome, and needed to point it out.
Now let’s get back into the recap:
The professor enters the classroom. The players look up, and meet Professor Mas O. Yes. Menos’ older brother is their homeroom teacher. The players start cracking jokes at him and quickly become the problematic students. Professor Mas O was enraged and gave a stern warning to Kai-Ku about his behavior. Everyone else rolled high to avoid trouble. I thought this was an interesting turn of events.
Professor Mas O was trying to do the teacher icebreaker to explain who he was, and Kai-Ku wanted to make jokes about how Menos abandoned him. Killion was giving Menos a list of compliments. K-Gundam was silent and being a robot. This player’s new character is totally different from XerX.
Mas O is a professor, board member, and a founder of HERO Academy. This is where the players discover that HERO Academy is being ran by the former villains who redeemed themselves. Menos gave Mas O’s Servant Contract to HERO Academy, and claimed that he’ll come back to retrieve his older brother someday.
Menos did eventually come back for Mas O after the battle at Fake Waterdeep. Killion laughed, remembering it was true that Mas O was there and dying at Fake Waterdeep.
After explaining that, Mas O goes further into the exposition lecture.
400 Years have passed since the final epic battle at Fake Waterdeep. XerX is presumably dead, Menos is presumably still adventuring and protecting the multiverse, and Kai-tick sacrificed himself to end both him and Lord Eggza. The Enforcers may be gone, but their efforts will not be forgotten. Their heroic legacy is what the HERO Academy stands for.
The school was founded shortly after the final battle, and has produced many great heroes like Killion’s father Gilgamesh, the King of Epic Heroes. Gilgamesh is famous throughout HERO Academy because he’s an Alma Mater. HERO Academy made him King.
Kai-Ku’s impressed with this. K-Gundam was debating his name change around this point in the session. Killion is getting special treatment from Mas O because family connections. As the exposition continued to get delivered, the players notice Roshi Nighthill was sitting next to them the whole time.
Roshi Nighthill makes friends with the K-Krew, and invites them to the party happening at XerX Yellow tonight. They party every night, but their latest excuse is to celebrate the first day of classes being over. K-Krew is into the idea, and decide to party with The Boys. XerX Yellow is basically a frat house.
Professor Mas O catches the conversation, but only Roshi Nighthill is picked on this time. Everyone else rolled to escape his wrath. Mas O isn’t pleased with being interrupted, and immediately demotes Roshi Nighthill into a Kai-tick Red, banning him from XerX Yellow for the rest of his academic career.
This happens in front of the entire classroom. On the first day of class. K-Krew is shocked at the intensity of the punishment. Also Mas O rips the XerX Yellow shirt off of Roshi and gives him a Kai-tick Red shirt. K-Krew notices a huge box of Kai-tick Red shirts that was in the classroom near the back entrance.
The first class ends around this time. K-Krew takes pity on Roshi Nighthill and become his friends. Roshi thanks them, but he still feels depressed about being demoted to an awful dorm like Kai-tick Red. Kai-Ku tries to cheer Roshi up, but when Roshi asks them about going to XerX Yellow’s party…
All of them said they were still going to the party. However, they forgot about Professor Mas O banning Roshi from stepping foot in the XerX Yellow Dorms. Thus, Roshi cannot go to the XerX Yellow parties. He can’t even grab his clothes or belongings from his old dorm room.
This sparks an interesting sub-plot for the K-Krew. Kai-Ku decides they need to throw a better party than XerX Yellow. They want to prove to the whole Hero Academy that the Kai-tick Reds aren’t losers. A part of them also wants to make Roshi feel better and less sad. At least I hope that was the case. Actions do speak louder than words.
K-Krew make the plans in-between classes. Kai-Ku wants Roshi to spread the word about the party while the rest of the team work out the details on music and decorations. Roshi is forever thankful, and runs off to spread the word about the Kai-tick Red party. Anyway, Kai-Ku realizes they would need a lot of gold pieces to buy decorations from the School’s General Store.
On instinct, Kai-Ku snaps his fingers at Killion. We cracked up when the player did this to Killion to give him some gold pieces. Kai-Ku thought he could snap his fingers at Killion. That was some wild sauce.
Killion gets the gold pieces from his portal ability. This player is similar to the Archer Servant Gilgamesh from Fate / Zero. He retrieves the expendable gold pieces, but he doesn’t know what to spend it on for a party. Killion claimed that he doesn’t count it either. The amount of gold pieces he takes from his dad’s magical treasury.
XerX Yellows approach K-Krew at this point. The leading bully, a human wearing a Kai-tick Head, gets in Kai-Ku’s face. The whole squad starts laughing at the XerX Yellow for wearing that. The bully, Shane, tries to ignore them so he can deliver a message about XerX Yellow: They’re the only Dorms that can throw parties. Nobody else.
Shane insists that the K-Krew cancel their party tonight. The K-Krew doesn’t give into Shane’s threats, and accuse him of being an insecure person. They even point out his obvious secret love for Kai-tick the Kin-slayer. Shane gets flustered, and runs off after that remark.
K-Gundam wants to learn the meaning of “Lit” and identified Shane as a “villain” for his rude behavior. K-Gundam’s character is different from the Kenji / XerX characters. This sudden change is 120% welcomed. We’re all liking this big robot that has no emotions.
The next class is beginning shortly afterward.
On the way there, K-Krew runs into Principal Kruger and their Kai-tick Red Adviser, Doctor Suresh. He’s a Human Wizard, Genetics Professor, and a former superhero. Because he described himself as a “Den Mother” of Kai-tick Red, Kai-Ku started to misgender this NPC big time. Doctor Suresh had to correct Kai-Ku whenever they interacted.
Doctor Suresh heard about the party happening at Kai-tick Red, and warned them that having a party without permission from their Adviser is against the school rules. Kai-Ku, thinking on his feet, declares that the “party” is actually a large study group to meet and greet the students on campus.
Using the power of persuasion checks, Doctor Suresh believes their story but he wants to attend regardless. He enjoys study groups, and wants to put his knowledge to use. The K-Krew does not disagreed and keep walking to class. Away from him. Kai-Ku wants to buy books to put bottles of alcohol in them to hide their booze.
Killion and K-Gundam focus on getting to the new class and their new team name. K-Krew wasn’t technically introduced into the session until this history class starts up.
Roshi meets up with them, having the same history class, and tells them that he spread the word. Plus, Roshi has the connections to the booze supply from a Menos Blue Guy. It seems like this party is going smoothly on Roshi’s end despite the deep pain he’s feeling inside.
Killion wants to sit in the back so he can sleep during class. Roshi had already gotten them seats in the middle, but K-Krew convinced him to change seats. Roshi shuffled quickly to sit with his new friends.
History class starts. This class is taught by former villain and current redeemed heroine, Professor Mirna. She is an immortal human with a strong connection to Kai-tick the Kin slayer. Mirna tries to teach the class about the history of the Enforcers, starting with the adventures in Phandalin, but nobody was interested in hearing about her villain past or the Enforcers’ history.
K-Krew and Roshi mostly talked about the party. This class didn’t last as long aside from needed exposition about Hero Academy and more Killion’s dad is a large benefactor of the school. Well, Kai-Ku did spill his Slurpee on a random student, and successfully put the blame on Killion.
Killion made a roll to convince the student he didn’t do it. When that didn’t work out for Killion, the random student realized he was Killion and apologized for being in the way of his Slurpee toss.
We paused halfway through the session to eat dinner. The characters wanted to go out for lunch after history class ended anyway. They bought some junk food called Mendy’s at the school store; a reference to getting Wendy’s IRL. The characters and players alike enjoyed food during this part of the session.
After lunch ended, K-Krew runs into Shane and his two XerX Yellow friends: a really pale Dragon born and a human in a hoodie. These NPCs didn’t bother to give names or speak. Shane was the one who did all the talking on behalf of his squad. Shane issued K-Krew a second warning to cancel their party at Kai-tick Red.
K-Krew are far from afraid of Shane and friends. They basically tell Shane to get lost, and decide to go back to their dorms. The time gap between lunch period and their last class of the day, Combat training, is roughly two hours. They’re trying to figure out how to get the party decorated without Doctor Suresh knowing. In addition, the K-Krew has no clue how to decorate their dorms or what to buy from the School’s General Store.
Roshi suggests hiring Gordon the Goblin to do the party decorations. Gordon the Goblin is the school’s janitor. The team wants Roshi to get Gordon the Goblin and hire him with Killion’s bag of money. Roshi tries to take the bag of money, but Killion’s hands are quick. Killion wants Roshi to GET Gordon the Goblin first and then the gold pieces will be given out.
Roshi NPC departs from the group to find Gordon the Goblin. The K-Krew heads back to the dorms and hang out. Killion and K-Gundam get into a heated debate about “K’s”. Kai-Ku showers and cleans his uniform in the meantime. Eventually, Killion and K-Gundam’s discussion ends.
Gordon the Goblin visits the Kai-tick Red Dorm already cleaning outside. Once the K-Krew figure out that the Goblin’s here, Killion gives the janitor the bag of gold pieces. Gordon the Goblin takes the bag and leaves to the School’s General Store. Kai-Ku has seen the worst in people, and believes that the Goblin simply ran off with the money.
Killion thinks otherwise, but “splits the party” for those two minutes to verify his claim. Killion catches up with Gordon the Goblin and has a brief conversation with him about what he’s been hired to do. Gordon basically verifies everything Killion believed. Gordy loves his job as a school janitor, and wants to help K-Krew create this awesome Kai-tick Red party.
After this, Killion runs back to the Kai-tick Red Dorm. Kai-Ku and K-Gundam were talking about what “lit” and “having fun” means. K-Gundam does not understand either, but he’s willing to learn. Roshi returned to Kai-tick Red too, and admires the red helmet that Kai-Ku has in the dorm room. He initially believes it’s a replica of Red Sentai, another known superhero.
However, Kai-Ku reveals that the helmet is the real deal.
Kai-Ku goes into his backstory for a moment. He tells Roshi about his hometown where he worked as a farmer, and Red Sentai’s death. Red Sentai died fighting an Adult Green Dragon. Roshi heard Red Sentai simply went missing, but felt sad about his death. Kai-Ku was really surprised that Roshi knew about Red Sentai.
After this interesting conversation, Roshi leaves to talk to his Menos Blue guy about the booze. K-Krew call out to him about Gordon the Goblin’s progress. Roshi nods and runs.
K-Krew go into small talk until they hear the screams outside.
Everyone, Kai-Ku first, hurries outside. They find Roshi and Gordon the Goblin beaten up outside the dorms. They also see Shane Offender cracking his knuckles. Kai-Ku jumps to confront Shane, hurts his leg slightly from the fall, but gets out his Rusty Sword.
Yes, the player insisted on starting with a Rusty Sword. Shane whips out two daggers, and engages Kai-Ku in combat. Killion and K-Gundam join in the fight too, making the fight a guaranteed victory. Three against one. What could go wrong?
Shane manages to take an unconscious Roshi hostage. Kai-Ku freaks out at this act of evil, and immediately gives into Shane’s demands. K-Gundam and Killion agree with cancelling the party. Getting Roshi hurt wasn’t worth all this trouble. Shane grins and leaves, thinking he could still call himself a hero in training.
After Roshi wakes up, he wonders what happened and why K-Krew cancelled the party. They insisted that it was for Roshi’s own good, and that they’ll have more fun hanging out alone. Roshi somewhat agrees, but he still hates being a Kai-tick Red student. The Boys (XerX Yellow students) made Roshi so happy with middle-class popularity.
Kai-Ku and Roshi are taken to Nurse Kissey Kiss to heal what Shane did to them. So far, K-Gundam and Killion haven’t needed to visit Nurse Kissey Kiss. They hope that a visit won’t be necessary. The healing process isn’t ideal for either of them. Roshi feels bad about Kai-Ku getting hurt over him and cries.
K-Krew ignores his sorrow and walk to combat class. This is a class ran by Professor Stoner Head, the mummy NPC with the power to negate magic and special abilities. Killion tries to summon his portals, but finds that he isn’t able to. Professor Stoner Head explains that his superpower to negate works on a passive level. As long as he’s conscious, the negate is active unless he manually turns it off. Which means knocking him out is the sure method to negate his negate.
Also, Professor Stoner Head was Gilgamesh’s sidekick for five minutes in the past. Gilgamesh likely doesn’t remember him, but Professor Stoner Head is still glad it happened. Professor Stoner Head is the most laid back teacher yet.
Professor Stoner Head is a… blunt person. He wants his students to be fully prepared for anything during combat, and has his power negation active to keep them in check during their physical activities. After the short lecture, Professor Stoner Head wants the students to “SUIT UP!”
K-Krew described to me their superhero outfits. Kai-Ku is wearing a Red Sentai imitation, Killion has an angelic uniform (Seraphimon from Digimon), and K-Gundam looks like big Gundam but describes an Iron Man suit up scene. This was a very fun scene because they got to brag about what they looked like to each other.
After they finished up, K-Krew runs into Shane and friends. Shane was wearing the Kai-tick Head in addition to a black shirt and cargo pants. He looked like a military solider. Friends was another human in a hoodie and a very pale Dragon-born. The rival’s vibes were strong in this standoff.
Roshi broke the tension by strolling up in a fancy suit and tie as his superhero outfit. Killion said he looked sharp but started to question how Roshi got into this school. I chuckled at that one.
The entire class walks into the indoor stadium, as big as a soccer field, and find Professor Stoner Head standing front and center. He explains that they’ll be playing a sports game called “Save the Citizen”. It must be played in teams of 3, heroes versus villains, and after one minute passes, winners will be declared.
I stole this game from Sky High. Why not? This is all for fun after all.
The teams have been set for the first round of class. K-Krew versus Shane and Friends. Roshi intervened, and wanted to add stakes to this game. If K-Krew won, they’ll get to throw the party tonight instead of XerX Yellow. If Shane and Friends win though, they want to beat up Roshi and Kai-Ku.
Roshi asks Kai-Ku if this was okay of him to do before agreeing. Kai-Ku agrees, thinking the NPC is very brave for even saying anything at all. Everyone agrees to the terms even Professor Stoner Head. Soon, the game starts with one minute on the clock. Ten rounds of combat. Can K-Krew Save the Citizen?
Kai-Ku wants K-Gundam to throw him at the fake doll Citizen hanging over a machine chopper. Shane and Friends are guarding all obvious points of attack. Kai-Ku thinks it might be their best shot. K-Gundam agrees and throws Kai-Ku rolling with advantage. The advantage didn’t help. Kai-Ku lands in front of Shane. They are face to face. Round two.
Shane attacks Kai-Ku with his daggers, but Shane doesn’t hurt Kai-Ku as bad as last time. The Very Pale Dragon born tries to hit Kai-Ku with a special power, but the NAT 1 I rolled flattened his punch. I’m surprised but also glad that no one made a dick joke about that moment.
The hoodie human turned his back on Friends. He didn’t seem interested in playing Save The Citizen. This gave Kai-Ku the perfect chance to try again with a toss and grab. With a NAT 20, Kai-Ku managed to beat the game in 30 seconds. Kai-Ku saved the citizen.
Shane and Friends were defeated. Killion didn’t get a turn, but he had a good time too taking the credit. The K-Krew were so hyped on the win that they left in the middle of class to have a party. In their defense, they didn’t know class was still happening . But then they continued moving after finding out.
Professor Stoner Head, Roshi Nighthill, and even Shane and his Friends try to draw them back with clever dialogue, but K-Krew is set on going back to the dorms. They had a party to throw.
K-Krew return to Kai-tick Red dorms, and saw that Gordon the Goblin finished putting up the decorations. The place is ready, and their DJ is even hooked up on the second floor of the dorm building. The music starts playing, and some of the students come out to hang after classes ended.
The Menos Blue Guy gets the KEG ready and filled with Killion’s favorite booze. I forgot the name Killion said, but that booze. Doctor Suresh comes out of his room from dorm ground level, and asks the K-Krew what the hell’s going on.
With a few lucky rolls and witty dialogue, Doctor Suresh is fooled into thinking “loud study group”. He leaves them to “study” for the next six hours. Before we jumped time, Kai-Ku rolls constitution to see how long he lasts drinking from a beer pong. That NAT 20! He kept going for awhile, and only stopped because Roshi got worried. Kai-Ku had fun. K-Gundam learned “lit”. Killion was tipsy, but having fun too with everyone else.
Six hours passed. Nightfall has come. The classmates are hungover, wasted, and beaten from all the partying. They hurry back to XerX Yellow and Menos Blue, thanking K-Krew for throwing the wildest party.
After everyone clears out, Kai-Ku goes to sleep on Killion’s bed. Killion is confused, and tries to pull him off. Everyone rolls to a stalemate, not able to get Kai-Ku. Eventually, K-Gundam lifts the bed to roll Kai-Ku into his arms. However, rolling to set the bed down causes one leg to break off.
Killion ends up taking K-Gundam’s extra bed because K-Gundam doesn’t require sleep to function. He simply stays up all night to recharge.
The Next Morning Arrives.
Kai-Ku rolled a NAT 20 to avoid hangover. Killion rolled low, but had a slight headache. Nothing too bad. K-Gundam woke them up in time for the second day of classes. They were ready this time unlike the beginning of the session.
Professor Mas O is ready to dive into the History of himself and the battles he had against the Enforcers 400 years ago. Before he begins this lecture though, Mas O excuses Kai-Ku, K-Gundam, and Killion to the Principal’s office. Principal Kruger has something to say to the K-Krew. They assume it’s about the party they threw, and prepare ways to get out of trouble.
When they arrive at the Principal’s office, K-Krew is surprised to find Doctor Suresh there as well. Principal Kruger tells the players that they will deal with the party later, but they must do something more urgent first. Principal Kruger needs K-Krew to resume looking for the missing five students.
Short info dump: five students went missing during the summer living at the Abandoned Dorm. Trudy was the sixth missing student, still recovering from the incident, but Trudy’s kidnapping happened for a completely different reason as we learned in the first session.
Principal Kruger doesn’t have a lot of time to explain the exposition, so he simply tells K-Krew that a missing student was possibly sited at the Dormant Volcano. The K-Krew are shocked to hear about a volcano being on this island, but they agree to investigate with Doctor Suresh watching over them.
They mostly agreed to skip the rest of classes. Second day of classes had to be avoided at all costs.
K-Krew + Doctor Suresh walk to the volcano, and find footprints. Human footprints with a closer perception check. They followed the trail to the end of the volcano and assume the worst. They were right. The volcano erupted, and slow moving lava came after them. The rolls were good for everyone to escape… except Doctor Suresh’s NAT 1. Luckily Kai-Ku and K-Gundam saved him from danger.
Soon, the lava stopped moving. A Fire Lady merged from the volcano’s opening. The lava wasn’t from a volcanic eruption. At least, the eruption didn’t come from the volcano. She was the source. K-Krew and Doctor Suresh are stunned to encounter this Godly creature.
Fire Lady wants to know why K-Krew disrupted her slumber. K-Krew explains the missing students situation to Fire Lady, and she immediately powers. Then it turns out that she is a they. They split into human twin girls named Lana and Emma. Both are wearing school uniforms, proving that they attend Hero Academy.
Emma and Lana didn’t see any missing students, but they do point K-Krew to Professor Gear snooping around Hero Academy’s campus again. K-Krew check around really fast, and spot Professor Gear in the forest area. They run after Professor Gear, leaving Emma and Lana behind.
K-Krew catches up with Professor Gear, and proceed to hurt him. The fight went better than the fights they had in the previous season. I believe K-Gundam NAT 20 Professor Gear into a trillion pieces. Killion and Kai-Ku had their moments weakening Professor Gear as well. These players are pretty great at killing things.
Doctor Suresh was busy dealing with two more Professor Gears, dubbed “Gear Bots” by K-Krew at this point. They learn that Gilgamesh had sent more Gear Bots to Hero Academy so the missing students problem would be taken care of faster. Gilgamesh has influence. Killion is unsurprised that his father would do something like this.
Once everyone figures out that they share the same objective, K-Krew + Doctor Suresh and the Gear Bots decide to team up. They journey back to the Abandoned Dorms as a unit rather than enemies.
The Gear Bots explain later that the Professor Gear they know isn’t with them. They also were slighted about K-Krew destroying one of their own, but also know that they live to serve Gilgamesh the King of Epic Heroes. Killion’s sorry for his father’s horrific behavior.
Once they enter inside without trouble, a Gear Bot and Doctor Suresh go check upstairs. K-Krew and the other Gear Bot check the hallway and the next room. They discover the fresh blood stains, and follow the trail with caution.
Once they discover a dead body—without his brain—in the kitchen pinned to the wall, Kai-Ku declares that this whole conspiracy might be too much for them to handle.
Then the Gear Bot turns on them. Whoever killed the student, they were talking through the Gear Bot. They wanted the K-Krew to stop investigating them or they’ll kill the rest of the remaining four students. After the message was given to K-Krew, Gear Bot turned off.
Whoever controlled the Gear Bot also dropped the dead student’s name: Samuel.
The other Gear Bot, however… the K-Krew run upstairs to check on Doctor Suresh. The other Gear Bot had taken Doctor Suresh hostage. The killer decided that they’ll make sure that K-Krew backs off by simply exploding. The K-Krew had thirty seconds to get Doctor Suresh and escape the incoming explosion.
Kai-Ku and K-Gundam pulled the Gear Bot’s grip off Doctor Suresh, and Killion used a precise d20 roll to fling his sword against Doctor Suresh’s superhero cape to make the running go faster. However, Kai-Ku decides that he wants to disable the bomb to save Abandoned Dorms as well. Killion and K-Gundam run out of the Abandoned Dorms.
Kai-Ku was foolish, but he minimized the explosion to the room. Kai-Ku survived the attempt, barely, but he saved the Abandoned Dorms. Killion and K-Gundam weren’t impressed, believing he should’ve just ran out with them. Kai-Ku wanted to save the Abandoned Dorms though.
Anyway, Doctor Suresh tells K-Krew that this is bigger than we all realized. They planned to report everything to Principal Kruger at the start of next session. This was a good time to end the session, and a way to give players a chance at recapping to Principal Kruger at next week’s game time.
Thanks for sticking to this story until the very end. We’re really just getting started, but this world is already growing on us. Hero Academy, Bubby Island, Mas O and Mirna are teachers… I’m liking all of this nice world-building and re-characterization of old NPCs.
Also, the players have leveled up! They are Level 2 characters now!
Stayed tuned for the next session recap. We have another game on Jan 29th, 2020!
