Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 34 "Hikari and Tailmon" Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read this with caution.
Episode 34—“Hikari and Tailmon”—was structured similar to TK and Patamon’s centric episode from two weeks ago, which I enjoyed so much as it allowed both character and plot to develop organically. The relationship between Kari and Gatomon was definitely explored very similarly to TK and Patamon’s relationship, but there was more emotion involved with Kari and Gatomon’s since they’re still getting to know each other. Kari’s a great character still, and her loving nature shined bright.
After the events of the previous episode, Tai, Sora, TK, and Kari are heading toward FAGA, the location of Millenniumon’s largest piece. The goal of the reboot series is to ensure the evil Digimon doesn’t revive while putting the group back together. However, the kids had arrived in an underwater city first to eat a delicious meal. The kids and their Digimon had something to eat FINALLY! Eating and pooping is a big deal in Digimon Adventure! I mean, of course, but the reboot hasn’t been addressing that aspect, like at all. Let them eat food and poop, Digimon writers! It’s only natural!
MarineAngemon and Gatomon were being utilized to explain the Holy Digimon, and the aspects of the underwater city. You know, that was pretty neat. The reboot series needs to explore the quieter moments more often. For example, Kari snuggling with Gatomon is a moment that has to happen a lot more often. I do hope they explore how Gatomon was a DarkKnightmon at one point. Yeah, Tai said in the recap that they’re the same Digimon. I dig it. Some won’t. That’s okay too. Either way, it’s canon.
The action sequences with Gatomon were pretty fluid and flex, and how she tried to keep Kari from joining the battles for her own protection fit well. I enjoyed watching the series utilize her Champion status more rather than trying to nerf her like they had done in Adventure 02. The moment when Kari received her digivice did feel earned, and that gave Gatomon the push she needed to achieve victory. The villains still need personalities, but whatever. Let’s beat the bad guys down and call it a day.
I don’t have much else to say about this episode except that I’m hyped for next week’s official debut of Angewomon. Once that’s taken care of, the episodes will likely move similar to this format.
#35 - Angewomon debut
#36 through #40 (?) - Matt, Mimi, Sora, Izzy, and Joe receiving Mega-centric episodes.
Around #40 or #41 range, we’ll likely get another Omnimon appearance or upgrades for Matt and Tai. Maybe both in consecutive episodes because that’s happened before too. The plot is following a predictable pattern to me, but we shall see how everything goes.
Thanks everyone for reading this episode review! I appreciate it! I’ll see you all next week in the Digital World!
