Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 16 “The Jet-Black Shadow Invades Tokyo” Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
After everyone received their Ultimate Digimon in the last six episodes, the latest episode refocused on the plot and what’s been going on with Tokyo. Tai, Izzy, and Mimi find themselves back home, but not everything is what it seems. The people around them aren’t reacting to their Digimon running around nor does the place appear to have suffer any repercussions from the power blackout.
Life seems normal, but the kids didn’t pick up on that until it was too late. They—especially Mimi—were just happy to be home, but were devastated to learn where they were was a digital copy of Tokyo—data taken from the real Tokyo. The time difference between the Human World and the Digital World also synchronized, so that meant the high-stakes to save Tokyo rose even higher.
The digital setting and the animation in this episode borrowed heavily from the video game Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, especially the Shibuya Subway Station setting. I was having serious flashbacks to my time playing the game and fighting Digimon in that subway station. The enemy Digimon—Eyesmon—also gave all the DigiDestined trouble, with everyone going Ultimate to face off against it. The orbs Digivolution scene came back in this episode, but I was annoyed that Agumon’s special evolution appeared instead of him just becoming an orb with Tentomon and Palmon.
Matt’s group showed up last minute too, with their Ultimate Digimon ready to help out toward the end of the episode. So, all six children were back together again alongside all the Ultimates fighting their strongest enemy Digimon yet. The cliffhanger with Eyesmon Digivolving into Orochimon is bound to give them all more trouble. I did enjoy how fast pace this episode was after Tai, Izzy, and Mimi figured out everything was fake, but I wished Matt’s group didn’t show up Deus Ex Machina style.
Kari showed up briefly in this episode though; she was evacuating her apartment with her mother and leaving Tai a note to meet them at grandma’s. I’m hoping this means she and TK will be making official appearances in the series sooner rather than later. Their appearances—along with their Holy Digimon Patamon and Gatomon—are going to change the course of the series.
The episode also confirmed Orochimon was the specific Digimon causing the blackout in Tokyo, so the DigiDestined have to defeat Orochimon to save Tokyo from its destruction. I was enjoying the plot momentum a lot, given that there was little to none in the last six episodes. I’m excited to see what happens next after the Ultimate battle with Orochimon concludes.
Thanks for reading this episode review, everyone! I really appreciate it! Let’s keep believing in the Reboot’s long game! I’ll see you all next week in the Digital World!
