unOrdinary “Safe House Arc” (Episodes 186 through 195) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On August 26, 2020, unOrdinary finished out the “Safe House Arc”. For those interested in my other unOrdinary story arc reviews, the link is here. I have been keeping up to date with the Webtoon since I started reading it back in May 2020. It’s been an interesting ten months that was made harder after I was forced to read weekly.
Damn you, uru-chan. Damn you.
Taking place directly after Isen outed John as Joker, Remi and Blyke have decided to start the Safe House school club—a place where all the students can feel safe without fear of being attacked in the hallways. Honestly, where the hell are all the teachers at this point? Then again, real-life schools aren’t that different when it comes to handling the bully issue either.
John also officially confirmed he’s Joker to the whole school when Zeke foolishly decided to challenge him. With John officially the new king, Arlo feels freer to do things that don’t involve being John’s lapdog. Arlo has plans to meet with his Aunt—a member of the Authority—to figure out what’s going on with EMBER and the lack of action on stopping them from killing more vigilantes. We’re close to reaching 200 episodes, but there has been little plot movement on this front.
John became involved with the Safe House club when he learned Seraphina was involved. Obviously jealous, petty, and insane, John declared that the club basically sucked since everyone he hates is in Safe House. Remi stood her ground against John though, challenging him to find a better way to make everyone feel safe and protected. Things are tense whenever Remi and John interact with each other, but Remi always finds a way to push through his toxic masculinity.
John’s hate against the Safe House ended up interfering with Seraphina’s plan to use the school club to draw in Terrance, the invisible low-tier who had been popping up since the “Kovoro Mall Arc”—otherwise known as the beginning of unOrdinary. This recurring plot point must be somehow connected to either the group who took Seraphina’s powers or EMBER killing vigilantes. I’m assuming these are two separate groups for now.
Seraphina also had to deal with Zeke—who went bandwagon as John’s new lapdog. The fight scene was great, seeing how strong Seraphina was without her abilities. Blyke had to step in though when things got overwhelming for Seraphina, demonstrating a new passive way to defeat bullies like Zeke. The new technique was good foreshadow on the next arc centered around Blyke’s vigilantism.
Overall, this arc was a slow burn for what’s to come. John has reverted to his own ways as king, Arlo is finding himself and questioning the Authority, Remi is trying to make a difference through peaceful means, Seraphina is adjusting to being cripple but wishes she could do more, Blyke is training, and poor Isen is just trying to stay alive. I have a bad feeling that John will do something awful to him soon.
Thanks for reading this Webtoon review! Let’s keep it reading!
