Get Even Netflix Original Season 1 Review
Major Spoilers are included in this season review. Please read with caution.
On August 5, 2020, I started watching the latest teen drama Get Even and finished all ten episodes on August 10. In typical teen drama fashion, the British series centered around four girls—Kitty Wei (Kim Adis), Bree Deringer (Mia McKenna-Bruce), Margot Rivers (Bethany Antonia), and Olivia Hayes (Jessica Alexander)—and their activities as D.G.M, a secret group dedicated to taking down bullies at their elite prep school.
While the structure of the series isn’t anything new—murder mystery with standard coming-of-age story beats—it was still pretty entertaining to watch. Unlike most teen dramas, the ten episodes were only 25-minutes long. The shorter season and shorter time length made Get Even highly binge-able and easy to follow. The plot and character stories—angst teen melodrama—were also balanced comfortably.
Kitty is the model student, Bree is the rebellious student, Margot is the tech whizz student, and Olivia is the popular it-girl. While the character archetypes weren’t unique either, the chemistry between the four girls shown in the pilot’s opening minutes was enough to convince me to give this show a try. Teen drama fans will have no problem adjusting to the show’s structure, making the binging experience quite comfortable. I stress the comfortable because this series isn’t super amazing, but it’s something interesting to watch if you want to kill two-and-a half hours.
The ending had also set-up a potential season two. If Get Even does get renewed, I wouldn’t mind spending another couple hours on seeing where the story goes next for the D.G.M. group. Overall, Get Even satisfied the teen drama fan in me. This show had similar story beats to Pretty Little Liars too if that helps convince anyone to watch this Netflix Original. Thanks for reading this season review, everyone!
