Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “First Mission Arc” (Chapters 10 through 13) Manga Review
Major Spoilers are included in this manga review. Please read with caution.
Synopsis: Demon Slayer follows Tanjiro Kamado in Taisho-era Japan, a kind-hearted boy who lives with his family in the mountains. Then everything changed when his family was slaughtered by a powerful demon. His sister Nezuko was the sole survivor of the incident, having been transformed into a demon herself. This kicked off the beginning of Tanjiro’s epic quest for vengeance against the demon who killed his family. More importantly, Tanjiro won’t rest until he finds a cure for Nezuko’s demon state.
On June 26, 2020, I started and finished the “First Mission Arc”—the second arc of the manga series. This was a short arc, but it gave us insight into the life of a Demon Slayer and what Tanjiro will be facing in the future. This arc centered Tanjiro’s first mission as a Demon Slayer. After passing the Final Selection, Tanjiro was sent to a town to investigate the disappearance of young girls. This led to Tanjiro encountering Swamp Demon, the one responsible for the girls’ disappearances.
I enjoyed the fight scene of Tanjiro and Nezuko battling this Swamp Demon together, learning more about Blood Demon Arts and Tanjiro’s Breath of the Water Techniques. I loved seeing how strong Tanjiro had gotten since the “Final Selection Arc” passed.
This arc also gave us more context on how demons functioned in this series, and the different classifications. Blood Demon Arts basically give demons the ability to use magic. The arc also touched upon the demon who killed Tanjiro’s family: Muzan Kibutsuji, the main antagonist of Demon Slayer.
The monster demons feared was Muzan Kibutsuji. At the end of the “First Mission Arc”, Tanjiro learned the hard way how powerful Muzan truly was. The cliffhanger made me want to keep reading, despite already experiencing it when I watched the anime.
Go read or watch Demon Slayer. I highly recommend this series. What are you waiting for?
