Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Drum House Arc” (Chapters 20 through 27) Manga Review
Major Spoilers are included in this manga review. Please read with caution.
Synopsis: Demon Slayer follows Tanjiro Kamado in Taisho-era Japan, a kind-hearted boy who lives with his family in the mountains. Then everything changed when his family was slaughtered by a powerful demon. His sister Nezuko was the sole survivor of the incident, having been transformed into a demon herself. This kicked off the beginning of Tanjiro’s epic quest for vengeance against the demon who killed his family. More importantly, Tanjiro won’t rest until he finds a cure for Nezuko’s demon state.
On June 27, 2020, I started and finished the “Drum House Arc”—the fourth story arc—of this amazing manga series. This arc centered around Tanjiro meeting other Demon Slayer members named Zenitsu and Inosuke, as they investigated a strange house occupied by three demons. One of the demons—Kyogai—was a former member of the Twelve Kizuki with a tragic human background. Well, all the demons in this series have a tragic human background, but this one was a failed writer so it hit different for me.
Anyway, I thought this story arc did a solid job on selling Zenitsu and Inosuke as secondary main characters. Zenitsu was a cowardly character, making loud, unnecessary noise about how weak he is, needing others to protect him, and harassing pretty girls—all in the name of being the comedic relief. Inosuke was a hotheaded fighter and wore a literal pig-head to conceal his pretty-boy face.
The story—finding missing children—of the “Drum House Arc” was a neat way to explore a new setting, introduce new characters, explore more of the Twelve Kizuki through a former member, and the comedic moments didn’t hurt either. The only issue I had was the lack of Nezuko in this arc and her plot device nature. Otherwise, I had a fun time reading this arc and reexamining it through the YouTube scenes. I may rewatch the anime series again, similar to what I’m doing with The Promised Neverland anime.
Thanks for reading my manga reviews, everyone!
