unOrdinary “Secrets Arc” (Episode 77 through Episode 92) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
I had a good time with this arc. Seraphina went back to school after her month-long suspension without her abilities, and John was forced to move into the boys’ dorms for protection. Despite the significant changes in their lives, John and Seraphina tried to keep things as normal as possible. However, Seraphina was still feeling concerned about John’s recent change in behavior.
Arlo was put under a lot of pressure during this arc. In episode 78, Arlo was showing concern for Remi when Blyke told him that she was spreading news about the EMBER threat via fliers at the school. John also moved into his new dorm room and discovered Blyke was his new roommate. Blyke was against the idea because he didn’t like how John treated Remi in one of the previous arcs, but this could be an interesting new character dynamic to explore.
Episode 79 showed Remi and Arlo talk about EMBER and her commitment to informing everyone at school that they’ll essentially die. The pacing in this particular arc was slower than usual, but the payoff to the arcs have been astonishing so far. The excellent character work made up for the slow pacing. Episode 80 explored how Blyke rose to become the “Jack” of the school, and how Seraphina—as “Queen”—officially picked him for the rank.
Episode 81 centered around Seraphina stopping a bully and almost getting hurt in the process. She was keeping her ability loss a secret. Arlo stepped in and protected her, but he warned her not to do something like that again. The secrets were unraveling in this episode. Seraphina discovered John called Arlo on her phone’s history, piecing together the inconsistencies in John’s cover-up story.
Then episode 82 was about Cecile—head of the school newspaper—trying to figure out how to publish everyone’s secrets without Arlo’s approval. The secrets weren’t going to stay secret much longer.
Episode 83 and 84 was about John getting beaten up again. Blyke and Islen found him afterward and took him back to the dorm room. Blyke was catching on to the secrets, and he demanded Islen tell him the truth. Islen refused and ran away because he knew John’s secret wasn’t something you said lightly. Then episode 85 came along, and Islen was forced to tell Cecile the truth about John. Everyone but Seraphina learning the truth about John was not cool.
Seraphina—in episodes 86 and 87—was targeted by a girl who wanted to confirm her ability loss. She threw a stone at Seraphina’s head and made her bleed, claiming it was an accident. I wasn’t enjoying the internal misery she was experiencing during this arc, and John not telling Seraphina the truth about him was incredibly manipulative. At the end of episode 87, Seraphina confronted John about what actually happened between him and Arlo during her suspension.
In episode 88, John told a version of the story that concealed his abilities, which Seraphina believed. Then John demanded Arlo meet him on the rooftop.
Episode 89 was an intense confrontation. Arlo and John were angry with each other. Arlo decided he was done with John, which made me wonder who was the true asshole in this scenario. I mean, John’s the asshole, and Arlo needed to help Remi. He didn’t have time for John’s crap.
Episode 90 was about the authorities trying to pry secrets out of Seraphina. She was trying to defend John—to make sure he wasn’t implicated—but the police detective Keon managed to talk the truth out of her. Keon shared a history with John from his time at New Bostin High School too, making him more curious about John’s involvement. This made Seraphina feel vulnerable, and she was attacked in Episode 91 for being literally powerless. Remi—Buddha bless her soul—came along and helped her in episode 92, closing out the arc with them at the infirmary.
The ending set-up an interesting direction for the next arc. Remi learned about Seraphina’s attempted kidnapping in the “Rage Arc”, and wondered if those were the same people—EMBER—who killed her brother Rei. John also learned Keon was back investigating Seraphina. This whole arc was an emotional rollercoaster honestly with all the lying and secret-keeping. At this point, I want things to really blow up in John’s face.
Gosh. So much drama happening. Onward to the “Vigilante Arc”!
