unOrdinary "Turf War Arc" (Episode 13 through Episode 17) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
As I continue to write these Webtoon reviews for unOrdinary, I’ve noticed how short the arcs have been so far. This series has very slow plot progression, but the author is making up for the lack of plot with stellar character progression. In this “Turf War Arc”, main protagonist John Doe took a backseat while Seraphina stood in the spotlight. She was talked into playing a Turf War with a rival school. The author didn’t go into the specifics of what this event was, but I read it as informal street fighting with superpowers.
Episode 13 reintroduced the character Elaine—the cute blue-haired girl John talked to on his first day of school—as Seraphina’s roommate. This led to a new character—a jerk boy named Arlo—being introduced, wanting Seraphina to join his team for the upcoming Turf War. I thought this arc was fascinating to read because these batches of episodes explored how the other Wellston students—like Elaine, Arlo, and Blyke—feel about Seraphina’s close association with John Doe.
Episodes 14 and 15 showed Blyke fight against the first two opponents—in two separate matches—of the rival school. Blyke had the ability to use energy beams. He won the first round but lost the second one. The fight scenes were short and detailed, and they did establish some rules in Turf Wars like tagging out your defeated allies. The reason behind doing them would be nice to know, but oh well… WE GOT FIGHT SCENES!
Episode 16 showed the match between Arlo and Rein—the one who defeated Blyke—going terribly wrong. While Arlo’s ability to create force fields overwhelmed Rein, the jerk boy took it too far and started torturing her after she already admitted defeat. Going into episode 17, Seraphina had to intervene and prevent Arlo from hurting Rein further, using her overpowering abilities like rewinding wounds and super strength to do so.
This incident—they still won the Turf War though—caused Elaine to tell Arlo about Seraphina’s close friendship with John Doe, the crippled student. The arc ended with Arlo planning to deal with John personally.
Overall, I liked how the arc showcased more superpowers in addition to more hints regarding Seraphina’s mysterious past with Elaine and Arlo before she met John. Based on how I’m progressing through the story, unOrdinary was likely designed for binge-reading. I’m looking forward to reading the next couple arcs—that build-up—that I got coming up here. Like I keep saying, I’ll keep y’all posted on my progress.
