Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 1 "Tokyo Digital Crisis" Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Digimon Adventure has made a comeback to save us from the digital virus plaguing our world. The reboot exceeded my expectations, and yes I’ll be watching weekly to regain my digital spirit. Episode 1 has all the original Digi Destined—including Kari—appear, but this series is taking a different approach to the character introductions with only a few selected—Tai and Izzy—taking the spotlight in the pilot episode. Their friendship was underrated in the original series.
This will allow the series to flesh out the other Digi Destined and their dynamics as they appear in the story. Tai seems to be the primary character as of right now, but this might change—I doubt it—with Matt appearing at the end of episode one.
Tai’s character-driven story mixed well with the plot. Episode 1 had Tai desperate to save his mother and little sister, Kari from dying in a train collision. So, they gave Tai a motive to slap those goggles on and be a hero!
Basically, the story is taking place in 2020 and has the Digi Destined having the ability to hop in and out of the Internet. So, it’s similar to the Digimon Movie: Our War Game, but it’s stretched into a first season. In my professional—mostly personal—opinion, I enjoy this direction for the series. Since technology is a part of our everyday lives, the premise feels refreshing for the rebooted series. Also, it’ll give the other Digi Destined a chance to join the fight in an re-imaged Our War Game.
The art and animation was also refreshing. The old nostalgia hit hard when I saw Tai’s apartment, and all of Tokyo was beautifully displayed. The digivolution of Agumon to Greymon was gorgeous, and seeing Tai and Agumon movements was seamless. It was great seeing Digimon and Human fight side-by-side.
Overall, episode 1 was a good kickoff to the series. I’m guessing Matt will have a focus in episode 2 next week. Or at least we’ll get teased on how he got Garurumon already, and his involvement in the Digital Crisis. Tai and Matt might fist fight, but I don’t mind that. It’s part of their character development at this point. See you all next week on the WEB!
