Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 2 "War Game" Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
After a strong first episode that jumpstarted the reboot, the second episode delivered with Tai and Matt as they teamed up to stop the Digimon causing havoc on the Internet. Episode two had raised the stakes considerably with an American missile being launched at Tokyo; a very similar threat that was presented in the original Digimon movie, Our War Game!
The plot was moving very quickly, but the character introductions and their motives were being steadily dropped. Izzy was still the “Guy in Chair” giving the important exposition to Tai and Matt and telling them where to go next in order to stop the evil virus Digimon from annihilating them all. There was no Tentomon in sight, but at least Izzy had a Digivice. Again, fast-paced plot momentum but slow character build-up was happening in the first two episodes. Similar to the original Sailor Moon series when they introduced each Sailor one by one.
The character dynamic between Tai and Matt hadn’t changed much—or at all—from the original series. Matt was still the lone wolf who liked to do things alone, and Tai was still the courageous kid who insisted on working together. Matt ignored Tai until he realized he and Garurumon couldn’t beat the enemy Digimon alone. Even with Greymon helping out, the two Champions weren’t enough to take down Argomon.
Then TK and Kari, Matt and Tai’s younger siblings, had received digital feathers—and their crests of Hope and Light—that somehow made Greymon and Garurumon Warp DNA digivolve into Omnimon by the episode’s end. This was an unexpected—but somehow not surprising—twist that made me realize that this reboot wasn’t taking its time; they knew exactly who their audience was and delivered on the Mega-level stuff. I can’t wait for episode three to come out.
The beautiful animation and music continued to impress me. The way Greymon fought and moved was much faster and much more enjoyable to watch, and using new music instead of over abusing the old nostalgic music was the better choice.
The intro and ending music are quickly growing on me. Thanks for reading. See you next week.
