Tower of God Volume 3: “A Rough War” (Episodes 56 through 59) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On October 7, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 3’s sixteenth story arc: “A Rough War”. The war has indeed been rough on both sides. Team Baam is trying to break through the Second Defensive Wall to save Ha Jinsung, but Baam had a run-in with Kallavan sooner than expected. Cha—who had accompanied Baam—reunited with his former love Dowon at the worst possible time. I’m feeling less optimistic about Dowon saying “yes” to going out with Cha at this point in time.
The action and emotional payoff were splendid during this arc, with Evankhell revealing her “true” form and Karaka’s character background as Ha Jinsung’s student was explored. I didn’t know there was an origin story regarding Karaka’s armor, but I loved it—which may tie-in with Ja Wangnan later on. The action sequence development between Karaka, Baam, and Kallavan—all former students of Ha Jinsung—fighting each other was masterful.
Kallavan’s stance on Slayers being false Gods and why he refused to become one was incredibly insightful. Kallavan wants “true” peace through Zahard’s rule—the storyline regarding the war is getting Naruto heavy. The alliance between Baam and Karaka reminds me of Naruto and Nagato’s relationship if they were allowed to get along for the sake of Jiraiya. Kallavan represents Pain—the version of Nagato who took the dark route.
Baam and Karaka teaming up against Kallavan also subverted the usual “leave a party member behind” trope that is typically seen in Shonen Jump series. Karaka originally was going to fight Kallavan alone while Baam went over the wall to break the spell and save their master, but Baam saw Kallavan as a “fortress”—another wall—that needed to be overcome first. There was no point in running if Karaka couldn’t win or stall long enough on his own, thus the team-up battle.
Evankhell and Yu Han Sung’s background was briefly explored too in the aftermath of Evankhell getting shot by a high-level bullet. I enjoyed the “early days” dynamic of Yu Han Sung and Evankhell, and how Yu Han Sung talked to Evankhell as an equal despite the vast difference in their power levels.
Tower of God has many amazing characters to keep track of, but I do love a legit 90% to 95% of them.
White was eating souls to gather his strength, with Khun growing impatient with his slow progress. There wasn’t much development on this front—it was more like a “check-in” scene to ensure we didn’t forget this was happening off-screen. This plot seed is still cooking—getting ready for a massacre of a feast!
The canine people were getting vengeance for the genocide, and Baylord Doom and Paul were given substantial character development in this arc. I cannot believe Baylord Doom was originally set-up as a major antagonist, only to become Baam’s ally alongside his other two brothers. Baylord Doom’s artwork stood out—the emotional strokes blended well with the narrative and made the pages stand out with how much he cared about his brothers and their canine people.
Overall, Hell—literal hellfire with Evankhell’s unexpected transformation—broke loose on the battlefield. Baam also powered-up using the fang of the canine people—making it work similar to his thorn. I’m looking forward to reading the next arc “VS Kallavan” (Episodes 60 through 66)—the last completed story arc for the time being.
