The God of High School Episode 13 “GOD / GOD” Anime Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
The God of High School officially concluded its first season. How the show began—three friends entering a high school tournament—is now this supernatural fantasy series filled with monsters and Gods. The action sequence in the first half and the Epilogue second half didn’t feel right. The second half was setting up everything for a season two that may not come, but the first half did deliver amazing fight sequences with little to no narrative drive.
The “wow” I mentioned in my episode 12 review was incredibly rushed. Jin Mori should’ve gotten more buildup to his transformation and new powers. The “wow” looked like a weak Deus Ex Machina without all the buildup, but there were hints about season two exploring more of Jin Mori’s Monkey King background. The cliffhanger with Jin Taejin makes me hope his mini arc from the Webtoon will kick off season two.
Yoo Mira and Han Daewi were snubbed throughout The God of High School’s anime series. They were beaten throughout the action sequences, only standing out alongside Park IIpyo when they teamed up with Monkey King Jin Mori to defeat Jegal Taek once and for all. While this epic final fight was gorgeously animated, I didn’t feel like it had the same weight as Jin Mori versus Han Daewi, Jin Mori versus Park IIpyo, or Jin Mori versus Bad Guy He Wrecked (I forgot his name).
I was engrossed with the action sequences the entire episode though, especially how fast and fluid the movements were. I was surprised at how well it grabbed my attention despite the story’s glaring issues in my face. Jegal Taek’s character, motives, and background were also undeveloped, and how he told Park IIpyo to “let go of him” fell flat as a result.
I mentioned this in a few episode reviews now, but the season would’ve definitely benefited from a bigger episode count or from cutting out a few storylines. I thought the first season should’ve only covered the Webtoon’s first major story arc—Jin Mori versus Han Daewi—but the anime needed to take some risks to get the fans onboard.
The God of High School is not the perfect Webtoon-anime, but it does a solid job on setting up a potential season two, with Jin Mori’s mysterious background, Park Mujin’s intentions for the next presidential election, and Jin Taejin’s current status. I’m hoping for a season two—a second chance for The God of High School to get the story right.
