Tower of God Volume 1: “Lero-Ro’s Test” (Episodes 9 and 10) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On August 30, 2020, I started and finished reading Tower of God Volume 1’s third story arc: “Lero-Ro Test”. While the arc only had two episodes, it introduced a Ranker named Lero-Ro, his pretest for the passing teams assembled on the Tower’s second floor to take the next official test, and exposition that explained the world-building of the Tower—and the Irregulars’ existence—for Baam and the reader.
The pretest also added an interesting element to the narrative when Baam passed the pretest—passing through a powerful shinsu barrier—without even trying. Shinsu is a substance created by the Tower and something that helps the inhabitants live inside the Tower by producing water, light, oxygen, etc. It’s basically the basis of all things and energy in the Tower.
As I continue to read this Webtoon series, I’ve been imagining myself climbing the Tower alongside Baam and his new teammates, which makes reading the story a whole lot more fun. In a way, I feel like the reader is supposed to feel that way while reading Baam’s personal journey to find his friend Rachel somewhere in the Tower.
At this point, I’m honestly more invested in the mystery of the Tower than Baam’s personal journey, but I’m hoping we’ll get more context and background on Baam and Rachel soon enough. Tower of God is playing the long game though, so I have to be patient.
Tower of God will hopefully pick up the pace in the next arc, but this was a nice little detour in order to give Bam and the reader natural dialogue exposition about the Tower’s physical structure, rules, shinso, and the Irregulars from Lero-Ro. SIU is doing a fantastic job with the story’s mystery element though, but he needs to work on making his artwork more consistent. Hopefully, once I progress far enough in the series, he’ll have fixed that issue. Thanks for reading my Webtoon review, everyone! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower!
