Tower of God Volume 1: “Crown Game” (Episodes 14 through 25) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
On August 31, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 1’s fifth story arc: “Crown Game”. This arc was the longest one yet, and the most fun with an introduction of a bonus game to give the participants a chance to climb the Tower faster by allowing the winner to immediately advance to the next floor. This was the perfect arc to show off the other teams’ powers and their backgrounds—particularly Anak Zahard, one of Zahard’s Princesses and a wielder of a weapon similar to Baam’s borrowed Black March.
The stakes of the Crown Game were risen once Anak discovered Baam had the Black March in his possession. She persuaded Baam to bet the weapon in the Crown Game, and she betted her own weapon—Green April—as equal collateral. Of course, Baam agreed to the deal because it was either that or she’d try to kill him for the Black March after the Crown Game was over.
There are officially 13 weapons in total based on the conversation about these special weapons. Each weapon is likely named after a color and month. But there are only 12 months, so the existence of a thirteenth weapon is quite interesting already. Also, since only Zahard’s Princesses are the only ones who are supposed to have these weapons, I’m also guessing there are at least 13 Princesses in total. That’s only assuming one weapon per Princess, but I don’t think there would be a Princess with two special weapons. Right?
Anyway, the fight scenes in the “Crown Game Arc” were amazing. I loved Anak being able to fight without leaving the throne—one of the rules in the game—and holding her own, as the rule about having the crown and sitting on the throne was supposed to be a disadvantage. The Green April is also one powerful weapon.
My favorite action sequence in this arc though was Hwa Ryun—a woman in a leotard suit and mask—against all the other teams. She was able to take them out with swift action and precision all on her own before making her way to Baam’s team and the crown to achieve victory.
If it wasn’t for the mysterious team helping Baam’s team out, they would’ve been defeated. The twist on the mysterious team—the only ones who survived their death match 400 to 200 to 3 from a different testing location—was also a serious game-changer for the end of this arc, the overall plot, and Baam’s journey to find Rachel. The optional bonus game also came to an end with unexpected results.
Thanks for reading this Webtoon review, everyone! I highly recommend Tower of God for its plot, setting, the action, artwork—which is becoming more consistent when it came to the action at least—characters, and the overarching mystery behind the Tower’s purpose. The first 25 Webtoon episodes have kept my attention so far. Let’s keep it reading—and climbing up the Tower!
