The 100 Season Six Review
Major Spoilers are included in this season review. Please read with caution.
“Do better” - Monty’s last wish haunts the rest of the characters, especially Clarke and Bellamy, going into this sixth season. The characters have to rebuild life for the billionth time on a different planet, and make alliances with the people there. It seems easy to do until the dark truth comes out about their history. The 100 left us off shocked last season when we jumped forward a 100+ years into the future.
Somehow, The 100 managed to breathe new life into a tired-out premise. This season is a true reboot that honors the characters’ epic journey through the last five seasons, and its tight focus on selected protagonists help the storytelling immensely. In fact, I believe this could potentially help new viewers who’d want to jump right into season six. Enough of it is already explained to give us a rehash on characters like Clarke, Bellamy, and Octavia.
Clarke (Eliza Taylor) was given a lot of work this season, more challenges with both her acting and character wise. I was honestly blown away with how the writers approached Clarke’s character and what she would go through later on. Talking about it would spoil the plot twist of what would await them on this New Planet, and that’s not fair to those who hadn’t watched season six yet. Go watch it! Why are you reading this first?
The character arcs were much deeper and complex than last season, giving Clarke, Madi, Bellamy, Murphy, Octavia, Diyoza, Jordan, and Raven more screentime. Madi’s story as a Commander was quite compelling to say the least. We needed more Gaia, Keeper of the Flame, daughter of Indra.
The first two episodes are intense. I was in paranoid mode alongside the characters asking “what’s happening” like twenty plus times. However, the pacing would later stagger in the middle, especially during the Octavia and Diyoza buddy team-up arc. Towards the end, The 100 regained its momentum to finish strong, setting up those pieces for their final season.
The new setting of the series, anew Planet called Sanctum, is really colorful and bright. The visual effects are handled better this season to enhance the characters’ dangerous surroundings, and the threats they’ll encounter during Sanctum’s“Red Moon” moment, which is episode two of the season. The 100 has a special place in my heart.
Clarke and Octavia were given the “redemption” arcs that drove most of the season. I expected as much, but I’m glad to see two women finally get the spotlight for much-needed self reflection. Despite what Octavia did last season with Wonkru, Clarke is somehow being treated like the worst person ever like all her decisions caused their problems. Raven’s character wasn’t working for me in this regard, playing the victim shamelessly for most of the season.
Overall, season six did surpass my expectations and superior to season five in numerous ways. That’s just my opinion, however. The 100 will return next year with a final season. I will be looking forward to see how the whole show finishes.
