Station 19 2x11 "Baby Boom" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
The episode begins at the station as they get a special delivery. Someone has dropped off a baby at a fire station. Seeing the other perspective on this scenario was enlightening to say the least. Drama series have used this trope a couple times (Jo Karev and Randall Pearson come to mind), and rarely do they show the perspective of the fire department receiving the baby. Yes, This Is Us did explore the firefighter’s side of things but that was more about him wanting to adopt Randall at the time.
Anyways, this baby gets passed around a lot throughout the episode.
The main story of the episode is an RV crashing into Station 19’s firehouse, getting too close to the fire trucks and Aid Car. A young girl was driving the RV because her mother was having a seizure, and she accidentally hit the gas petal straight into the episode. What a typical Grey’s Anatomy tactic.
While this is going on, Jack and Dean have dinner with Dean’s parents and sister. They are judgmental of Dean’s lifestyle and make it clear they do not approve of the distance between them either. Dean’s sister soothes things over with her own news: she’s moving out to live on her own without help. The solution to these issues was unexpected: the parents will support the sister’s moving out in exchange for Dean going on blind dates set up by his mother. Cool.
Andy bonds with the young girl, trying to keep her calm until they got the situation under control. Warren is putting his surgical knowledge to the test, trying to save the mother from her seizures. He’d fit in perfectly at Medic One… Ben Warren needs to stay there once he eventually gets it. The job changing all the time is not helping your wife’s anxiety issues.
When the baby lands in Maya’s hands, the therapy session was incredible. Maya talked to the baby about her love affair with Jack, and what it means moving forward, giving her space to sort through her feelings about it. I support the two of them together, this is the kind of ship I usually root for.
The ending has Maya ready to talk to Andy about Jack, but then Ryan destroys everything by running into them with a date… Andy and Ryan are not exclusive, they agreed on this, but of course, Andy didn’t really mean it. The drama continues…
Vic and Ripley are fighting because she told Travis and Jack about their romance. He is worried about the consequences and unintentionally invalidates Vic’s feelings. At this rate, the two of them will either survive or one will lose their job / reputation.
Overall, Station 19 is a true spin-off, superior to Private Practice, and a tight-knit method to set-up mini-crossovers that feel organic. Maya and Jack can be a great couple, but they’re going to fight a lot first. They’re the kind of couple who’d fight a lot.
