This Is Us 3x16 "Don't Take My Sunshine Away" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
The episode deals with what happily-ever-after looks like for the Big Three. Season three has been hit and miss throughout its run, but I think they nailed this one for the most part. Kate and Toby, especially our boy Toby, are struggling to care for Baby Jack, Kevin and Zoe are talking about his issues plus the future of their relationship, and the most explosive storyline of all, Randall and Beth’s issues around her teaching dance.
The flashback story about Jack and Rebecca watching the Big Three go on their first middle school dance contrasted well with the present day, showing how even at young ages, the triplets haven’t changed too much. Randall still prioritizes his needs over his promises (ditching the girl to do homework versus not supporting Beth’s dream to teach dance class), Kevin gets everything he wants and having Sophie return in both stories was a smart choice… showing how the two of them are moving on, closing the chapter on their past.
Kate and Toby’s was the weakest only because we’re focusing on Toby and not Kate’s struggles to love / worry for their child. She was mostly there to get him to confront those fears and to bond with their son.
I was mostly focused on Randall and Beth, the most heated storyline, and the one left on a cliffhanger that will determine their future. Randall was making me furious, and the dinner scene was full of tension… Beth deserves better, and I hope they work out their issues because breaking them up will be a mistake.
Overall, compared to last few episodes, especially “The Waiting Room”, I cried and enjoyed it. Next week is going to be amazing. We’re close to the end of the season.
