This Is Us 4x03 "Unhinged" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
This week’s This Is Us is a slow burn.
After the first two episodes that refreshed the series, this week’s episode went backwards in terms of entertainment. I believe the show will find ways to tie us back to Randall’s first day as councilman and Kevin’s attempts to help Uncle Nicky while bonding with Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison) at that AA meeting, but most of it was kind of boring. But, I was not a fan of Kate and Toby’s storyline this week. The flashback portion of the episode was interesting on its own merits, but it was kind of difficult to connect it to the present day because the Big Three Adults were doing their own thing this episode.
However, I did like how Young Kevin was there for Randall like Tess and Deja were there for each other. It was a small moment, but Tess talking about her failure to come out and Deja’s crush Malika having a six-month-old daughter was sweet. Annie needs a storyline at some point so all three of them can become the next Big Three. The flash-forward is a thing after all.
Jack and Miguel’s friendship was explored as well. I think the writers are trying to make us like Miguel once we learn how / why Rebecca fell in love with him. It’s working on my end because Miguel really loved Jack, and was willing to quit his job to save Jack’s. That’s some solid loyalty right there, and it was great to see. I think this was the moment they became best friends.
Kate made the whole storyline about Toby doing CrossFit about her weight, and that’s all. I have nothing more to say about that. I mean, yes she did admit she was projecting, but we’ve been through this time after time. The ending was nice with Kate making friends with her very entertaining neighbor.
Overall, this episode was not the best, but it has potential to set-up future storylines. Next week’s episode should hopefully be better.
