Supergirl 5x01 "Event Horizon" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Season Five premiere had everything we wanted / needed / begged for. Lena has evolved into an actual character / antagonist, Kara finally decides to tell Lena the truth about her being Supergirl, too late of course, and all the other characters are enjoyable to watch. It was amazing to see the cast finally well-rounded and with purpose. Even James Olsen!!!
Let’s start with that Kara and Lena confession scene because this conversation was a long time coming. For most of the episode, Kara struggles with how long she’s kept the secret from Lena and her active avoidance of the subject matter. Alex played a supportive sister and gently urged Kara to tell Lena ASAP. Ultimately, Kara blurted it out right before Lena could set-off her malicious plan: exposing Kara Danvers as Supergirl to the whole world.
At first, it appeared that Lena struggled with the confession as she believed Kara would never tell her… and on the surface, Lena started to lean on the forgiving side. However, it made more sense to have Lena become an actual character with hurt feelings. Yes Lena’s going down a dark path, but Kara had a lot of fault in this inevitable battle. However, this whole thing is Lena’s way of lashing out as her love for Kara Danvers is still very real.
The writers also found an easy way to tie Lena with the main villain of the season: technology and its potential evilness. Supergirl began the situation with the main characters complaining about technology and not really connecting with people.
Kelly Olsen is officially a season five character, and her relationship with Alex is shoved in our faces like we already accepted them. That’s pretty bold of the show to do considering I’m not invested in their romance just yet. To me, the writers are trying to recreate season two’s Sanvers romance (Alex and Maggie). I kind-of want to break up early on so they can actually “fall in love” through fighting to stay together… or something like that.
Andrea Rojaz is the new owner of Catco and an antagonistic ally of Lena Luthor. These two women have a lot in common with each other and will likely do more secret deals moving forward. There was a lot of exposition when it involved the appearance of this week’s villain, Midnight, and J’onn’s brother, another major antagonist. Season Four’s quickly disappearing from our television rearview mirror. We’re leaving it all behind.
Brainy and Nia are the cutest couple. I love the discussion of physical intimacy, and how they continue to play off each other’s chemistry. They didn’t get to do much but be cute. That’s okay with me. They’ll get more screentime later as the season premiere had a lot of other story elements running around that took precedent.
Also, I feel like Hope, Lena’s AI computer, will turn evil and go rogue. Knowing this show, they’ll go down that route. But, the cliffhanger with Eve being kidnapped helped me on remembering another antagonist, The Leviathan. Supergirl may have too many villains.
Overall, the season five premiere was refreshing and actually great to watch. Supergirl is being to embrace comic book silliness, fresh storylines with all the main characters, and Kara and Lena’s friendship are taking center stage for once. Kara’s new haircut and pants suit is freaking awesome. I’m excited to see what else happens in this first half until Crisis on Infinite Earths.
