Supergirl 5x04 "In Plain Sight" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
James Olsen was given a lackluster send off. For the past four years, I’ve disliked what the writers have done to his character after demoting him off being Kara’s love interest post-season one. By the way, that was a bad call because James Olsen never recovered from it. Making him the CEO of Catco, then a vigilante named Guardian, Lena’s love interest, and whatever they did to him in season four… it was time to call it quits. James Olsen needed love. That was a horrible build-up to my actual episode review because I actually did like the episode, “In Plain Sight”, delivering on some great storylines and character dynamics that included Jimmy Olsen.
J’onn had some great moments in this episode. He continues to hide the truth about what he did to Malefic and burdens himself with all the guilt of his brother’s actions. Honestly, this has been some of J’onn’s best work yet. This storyline is delivering on a Martian Manhunter that is actually compelling and relevant to the overall plot of the season.
Also, Alex Danvers (under Malefic’s control) and J’onn had the most heart-wrenching scene. While us as an audience knew she didn’t mean those hurtful words, but J’onn’s unable to tell the difference as he’s living his worst fear—the reason why he kept the truth from his Earth family. J’onn’s reaction to Alex’s words held that emotional scene together though, as he believed it himself.
Side-note: I think Alex and Kelly are still too fast, so I hope they cool it soon with them. Brainy and Nia are the most realistic couple on this show. William and Kara should not get together at all, but I can feel the writers trying to push it on us.
Kara and J’onn’s confession scene was smaller than the Alex and J’onn, but this scene was purely supportive as Kara isn’t controlled by Malefic. I did enjoy how they used the Kara-Nia subplot to uncover Malefic-Alex’s deception. The Kara-Nia subplot is something I’d like to see more on the show, too. It was wonderful journalism with awkward tension on the romantic front.
Lena had a small but effective role in this episode. She tampered with the Phantom Zone projector to teleport Malefic into her secret lab instead. Once the Super Friends find out what she did, Kara’s not going to be too happy. Seeing her interact friendly with everyone hurt because she was purely deceiving them. However, a part of me hopes that she was a bit sincere on some level. Right, Hope?
