Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie Review
Major Spoilers are included in this movie review. Please read with caution.
In light of Tom Holland staying in the MCU, thank you Sony and Marvel for compromising that 25% deal, I’ve decided to discuss this amazing movie. This is the last movie in Phase 3, concluding the Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While most people would believe Avengers: Endgame should be the definitive conclusion, Far From Home follows the aftermath of that battle and how Tony Stark’s death affected young Peter Parker (Tom Holland).
The primary strength of the movie isn’t the actual plot, which is pretty decent, but the emotional realness of the characters, particularly Peter Parker and MJ’s (Zendaya) teenage romance. Their cute but awkward interactions, Peter’s insistence on telling MJ how he feels about her, and genuine attraction to each other doesn’t feel forced in the slightest. Putting them in a place like Europe makes the whole “telling you how I feel about you” a lot heavier to pull off on Peter’s end. It reminded me a lot of how I was in high school. For example, a friend of mine once said, “You don’t write her a poem and read it in front of everyone. You can just ask for her number”.
Telling people how I feel directly wasn’t my strongest trait in high school. The romance between Peter and MJ was clearly my favorite part of the movie. The actual superhero stuff was amazing too: Nick Fury finally returned with Maria Hill to recruit Spider-Man to fight the Elementals alongside new hero Mysterio named Quentin Beck. This is all a lie as you clearly know by now. Mysterio is the villain who faked the attack of the Elementals to become the next Iron Man, wanting his vengeance against Tony Stark for wronging him and firing him.
Of course, the movie’s special effects are amazing and plot-relevant unlike let’s say, Doctor Strange. The characters have realistic emotional depth, the fight scenes are spectacular, and those Avenger level plot twists that should’ve been obvious, but weren’t, worked like a charm. Peter and MJ also got together in a romantic way that forces them to simply say how they feel about each other. Being direct may not always work, but it’s better than wondering “what-if?”
Overall, I enjoyed the movie and its characters. Tom Holland and Zendaya bounced off each other really well, there was a heartbreaking follow-up to Endgame and set-up of Phase 4 was set in motion. Writing this movie review and knowing Tom Holland will be involved as the “next Iron Man” brings me immense joy. I’m excited this Spider-Man will have a successful trilogy. I believe in it.
