The Flash 6x02 "A Flash of the Lightning" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
The Flash primarily deals with Barry and Iris processing Crisis On Infinite Earths. Unlike what the show did with Iris’ “inevitable death” during season three, Barry actually comes to terms with his disappearance in the future because “that’s what heroes are supposed to do”. Grant Gustin and Candice Patton’s scenes as Barry and Iris are getting stronger coming off this revelation. Iris West is keeping her momentum up as an exceptional character still lit… two episodes in a row! The writing has improved immensely…
Jay Garrick ( John Wesley Shipp) returned from Earth-3 to help Barry figure out a Crisis On Infinite Earths alongside his wife, Dr. Joan Williams, the doppelganger of Barry’s late mother. The theme of parenthood was strong in this episode, seeing a version of Barry’s parents again, and Joe West’s fatherly advice felt… super refreshing. That speech about resilience really sold Barry on the idea about dying to save billions.
Bloodwork felt slightly out of place in this episode. I already accepted Rosso as the main villain, and all his scenes remind me way too much of Mohinder Suresh from Heroes. I don’t see any redeeming qualities in his character based on his behavior and current actions.
Killer Frost “getting a life” is potentially going to be uninteresting and perhaps even boring. However, I do like the direction of Cecile’s character. All the characters on this show have distinct storylines unfolding… that’s actual progress. Cisco and his girlfriend are whatever too, but he’s back to season one humor and that’s really all that matters. Ralph has that missing person case that’s been put on hold for now, but I’m interesting to see where that goes later on.
Overall, The Flash is showing good signs of improvement. Side note: it’s interesting to see Barry and Oliver dealing with Crisis On Infinite Earths separately as The Monitor warned both of the heroes that they would have to die to stop it from wiping billions. I can’t wait for the two of them to talk about this in December.
